The long-rumored Final Fantasy IX remake has reportedly hit another major setback, with development said to have stalled despite the project previously being “very far along.” The information comes from Alex Donaldson of RPG Site, who discussed the project on ResetEra. According to Donaldson, the remake was being developed as a single game, rather than following the multi-part structure used for the Final Fantasy VII Remake project.
The project has never been officially announced by Square Enix, so its reported status should be treated as unconfirmed. However, the latest comments provide some of the clearest details yet about how the rumored remake was supposedly structured.
Final Fantasy 9 remake reportedly remains possible
According to Donaldson, the project had progressed considerably before eventually stalling. He described the rumored remake as a single release with a smaller scope than Final Fantasy VII Remake, while suggesting that existing development work could potentially be revisited in the future.

Donaldson also pointed to Square Enix’s history of reviving projects that had previously appeared to be canceled. He specifically compared the situation to the new Dissidia mobile game, which reportedly spent significant time in limbo before development resumed.
The situation became more concerning after artwork reportedly created as potential key art and box art for the remake was instead released during Final Fantasy IX’s 25th-anniversary celebrations. Square Enix has officially celebrated the game with new artwork and anniversary material, but has not confirmed that a remake exists.
The original Final Fantasy IX remains available on modern platforms, giving fans a way to experience Zidane, Vivi and Garnet’s story while the remake rumors remain unresolved.
