The plot of Mike O’Malley’s brand-new family sitcom, Extended Family, centers on a divorced couple who have decided to stay in each other’s lives as close friends and co-parent the children.
Casting Jon Cryer as Jim Kearney, Abigail Spencer as Julia Mariano, Jim’s ex-wife, Donald Faison as Trey Schultz, Lenny Clarke as Henry Kearney, Fin Sweeney as Jimmy Jr., and Sofia Capanna as Grace, the daughter of the former couple, are the ensemble cast of this comedy series.
The comedy program will center on a dysfunctional family that is striving to find harmony and order in their lives. The creators of the show wanted to find out how different the lives of separated couples would be while trying to raise the children together, which would add a humorously modern twist to family dynamics.
Recap
The Kearny family’s narrative is told in Extended Family. Jim and Julia called it quits on their 17-year marriage. Grace and Jimmy, their children, have found it difficult to adjust to the recent changes, particularly the former. In an almost celebratory manner, Jim and Julia finalized their divorce with a “Reverse wedding ceremony.”
The divorced couple still takes care of the children, nevertheless, just like they used to. To minimize conflict or resentment, they wish to make their transition into adolescence as smooth as possible. Grace is away at summer camp in the first episode. Her parents got her a goldfish they called Google.
When Grace isn’t at home, Jim has been emailing her videos of the fish. But he finds out that by overfeeding it, he accidentally murdered it. When he goes to his father, Bobby, for advice, Bobby tells Jim to tell lies. Though it’s not his first choice, Jim finds logic in the disagreement. Bobby mentions how, when he was younger, he told Jim a falsehood about the death of his cat, Rusty.
Jim utilizes “Family Tracking” to locate Julia in a hotel. After being insulted, she decides not to be tracked. The news breaks to Julia with dismay. She does concur, though, that lying to Grace and switching Googles for another fish is the better course of action. Trey, the Boston Celtics’ wealthy and attractive owner, and Julia are currently dating. Trey had to handle a social faux pas when they first met.
His awful words against redheads angered a significant number of his fan base. Crisis manager Julia intervened to handle the situation, but she ended up falling in love with him. Trey thought differently about the situation. He didn’t believe it was fair to Grace’s intelligence to lie to her.
She’s already found it difficult to deal with the divorce. And there would be even more baggage with this new disruption in her life. Grace is already in the building’s elevator when they are talking about the problem. Jim ducks into the freezer and conceals the fish. Jimmy had to point out the new fish to Grace before she noticed it. Grace isn’t upset that the fish died, despite what one might assume.
She clarifies that their family’s current state of disintegration is the true cause of her grief. Grace misses the time they spent together and feels excluded. She also makes references to the fate of abandoned children from dysfunctional homes. They start engaging in vices, including drug and alcohol use.
She is also unhappy since the pair has been making videos that seem to be upbeat about divorce. Jim and Julia are aware of their mistakes. They express regret to Grace and resolve to work together going forward.
