The upcoming Elden Ring movie could mark a major turning point for A24, with its reported production budget approaching $200 million. Directed by Alex Garland, the live-action adaptation of FromSoftware’s acclaimed action RPG is expected to bring the Lands Between to the big screen with a scale rarely associated with the independent studio.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, sources familiar with the production estimate that the film’s budget is nearly $200 million. If accurate, that figure would make Elden Ring the most expensive movie in A24’s history by a considerable margin, placing the fantasy adaptation closer to the budgets of major Hollywood blockbusters than the studio’s traditionally more modest productions.
Elden Ring Could Cost Nearly Three Times More Than Marty Supreme
A24’s previous record-holder was reportedly Marty Supreme, the 2025 drama starring Timothée Chalamet and directed by Josh Safdie. According to Deadline, the film had a production budget of approximately $70 million.
At nearly $200 million, Elden Ring would cost almost three times as much as Marty Supreme. Garland’s earlier film, Civil War, reportedly had a budget of around $50 million, highlighting the scale of the studio’s latest undertaking.
The reported figure would also put the adaptation in the same general budget range as large-scale studio productions such as Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, A24 and the filmmakers have not publicly confirmed the reported $200 million figure.

Star-Studded Cast and Ambitious Fantasy Production
The reported budget reflects the scale of a production built around one of gaming’s most recognizable fantasy worlds. The film features Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Tom Burke, Nick Offerman, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, and Peter Serafinowicz.
A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment officially announced the adaptation in April 2026, confirming that Garland would write and direct the film. It is being filmed for IMAX, suggesting that the filmmakers intend to deliver a cinematic presentation suited to the game’s vast landscapes and imposing fantasy environments.
The film draws from the dark fantasy universe created by FromSoftware under Hidetaka Miyazaki, with its mythology developed with contributions from Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. However, the filmmakers have yet to reveal detailed plot information or confirm which characters the cast members will portray.
When Will the Elden Ring Movie Release?
The live-action Elden Ring adaptation is scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 3, 2028. Filming wrapped in July 2026, and the production is now moving toward its theatrical release.
An earlier report placed the film’s budget at more than $100 million, making the newer estimate particularly notable. Neither A24 nor Bandai Namco has publicly confirmed the nearly $200 million figure, so the final production cost remains uncertain.
If the reported amount proves accurate, the movie will represent a significant financial commitment for A24 as it expands into large-scale video game adaptations. Its eventual box-office performance could help determine how confidently the studio pursues similarly ambitious projects in the future.
