The main character of “Dragons of Wonderhatch” is Nagi, who has a special talent called “sound-color synesthesia” that enables her to see colors when she hears particular noises. Having been a misfit for the majority of her early years, Nagi has always dreamed of being able to fly.
Nagi encounters Thaim, another outsider from the Upananta culture. But Thaim has what is regarded as a disability in his world—he cannot hear the voices of the dragons who live in his territory. Together, they overcome convention and the traditional boundaries between their two realms to discover more about the enchanted mystery of life and, well, dragons.
The 17-year-old actress provides Nagi’s voice. She previously starred in the 2019 TV series “Aku No Hado: Satsujin Bunsekihan” and the TV movie “Momosanto 7-nin no Papageno” (2022). Thaim is narrated by the 20-year-old Tokyo native. Daiken has had a very busy 2023.
He is starring in the television series “The Greatest Teacher,” where he portrays Toru Hoshizaki, and he is directing the films “Dragons of Wonderhatch,” “Nemesis,” and “Insomniacs After School.” Kentaro Hagiwara previously directed “Our 30 Minute Sessions” and “Tokyo Ghoul.” The group behind “Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045,” Production I.G., is behind “Dragons of Wonderhatch.”
Recap
The 45-minute pilot episode takes its time setting up the main idea, which isn’t explained until the second episode. Disney’s decision to broadcast the first two episodes simultaneously was wise because the second edition’s conclusion contains the story’s most intriguing turn.
Some fans might enjoy finding the many easter eggs and direct allusions to several well-known manga works that the creators have included. For instance, the eccentric Upananta resident Saira receives an Astro Boy as a present because she enjoys collecting items from the human world.
Although the animated segments of “Dragons of Wonderhatch” are entertaining and humorous, the events in the human world happen slowly. Mackenyu, who was last seen in “One Piece” as the mysterious Roronoa Zoro, appears to be portraying a character that is asocial and enjoys fighting.
Akuta’s experiences in the human world are pretty routine, and the one battle he gets into is poorly staged, with unclear camera moments that detract from the intense scene. Despite this, he does a great job delivering the brief that is provided to him.
In the upcoming episodes, perhaps, the character’s trajectory will get better. In the meantime, Okudaira Daiken gives Tyme a lively voice, but because the actor doesn’t enter the human world until the second episode, it’s too soon to comment on how he plays the part.
However, he undoubtedly vows to bring a great deal of excitement, vitality, and movement to the ordinary world of humans. The second episode of “Dragons of Wonderhatch,” titled “The Secret Room,” is only 32 minutes long, considerably less than the first, but because of its languid pacing, it feels much longer.
While episode 2 finishes on a pleasant cliffhanger, I anticipate that the series will get much more exciting in the upcoming editions for those who are looking for a fast-paced, action-packed series that blends the anime world with the human world.
Spoiler
The titles for the episodes are The Boy Who Came to Yokosuka and A New Nation. Nagi is shocked to witness Thaim materialize out of thin air. She joined him in his search for Aktha despite her initial misgivings after discovering the reason he had entered her planet.
But they’re in for a nasty surprise. When Thaim eventually locates Aktha, he realizes that the great hero is not the same person he once thought highly of. Thaim even asks Aktha to come back and save Upananta, but Aktha declines. Thaim challenges the strong hero to a duel because he cannot accept Aktha’s denial.
