Doctor Sleep, the sequel to the highly-rated horror movie The Shinning, came out almost 40 years after the first movie’s release. The movie Doctor Sleep was adapted from Stephen King‘s 2013 book of the same name. Mike Flanagan, who created the great Netflix shows Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House, wrote and directed them.
Ewan McGregor plays the adult version of Danny Torrance, the psychically gifted child from the first movie. He’s still troubled by what happened at the Overlook Hotel. Rebecca Ferguson plays Rose the Hat, the head of the True Knot, a frightening group. And finally, Kyliegh Curran plays Abra Stone, a little girl with ‘the gleaming’ power.
Doctor Sleep Filming Locations
Although most of the movie was shot in Atlanta and the region around it, a portion of it takes place in the made-up city of Frazier, New Hampshire.
The beautiful aerial views from the opening sequences feature Saint Mary Lake island and a vehicle crossing the Going-to-the-Sun Road. Both of the locations are in Montana in Glacier National Park. Some scenes were degraded, given a day-to-night color change, and had snow digitally applied.
Overlook Hotel & Colorado Lounge
The Rocky Mountains’ Overlook Hotel serves an important role in the film. The Timberline Lodge at Mount Hood, Oregon, served as inspiration for the exteriors. But like in the original The Shining, filmmaker Mike Flanagan chose to shoot every hotel scene on a sound stage.
The designs of the original set from The Shining, which were made accessible to the production by Warner Bros. and the Kubrick Estate, were used to build a surprisingly accurate copy of both the interior and the exterior of the iconic Overlook Hotel. It was built in Atlanta’s Blackhall Studios.
Flanagan also carefully examined The Shining frame by frame to ensure that every element and object shown on film was correctly re-captured to rebuild the effect. Fans of The Shining would have undoubtedly experienced many happy memories when watching this movie. The Newton Brothers’ strong score only serves to amplify those feelings.
The Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite, which opened in 1980, was the model for the production’s famous Colorado Lounge. This is where the majority of the movie’s interiors and the freezing labyrinth were filmed. The owner of the land, Travis, received a payment of $2,000 for its use in the movie. He has the cheque in a frame on his wall right now.

Florida
The Riverview Hotel in St. Marys, Florida, served as the backdrop for the opening scene. The fictional Frazier town in New Hampshire was shot in Covington Square close to the Mystic Grill, a diner famous for being a common filming location for Legacies, The Vampire Diaries, and Sweet Magnolias.
These sequences were shot at Covington’s main square. The Newton County Courthouse, constructed in 1884, can be seen sticking out behind the train. It was added to the list of National Historic Places on September 18, 1980. On August 6, 1998, the entire region was added to the list of National Register of Historic Places.
Horror films like Halloween II (2009) and Friday the 13th Part 6 have also been filmed nearby on or around the town square.
Danny and this girl are facing Hays St. while seated on the bench. They are sitting on a bench, but it’s not the one from the movie; it’s just nearby. In actuality, the bench they are seated on is the same bench that little Danny was seated on earlier in the movie.
70s Sequence
A short scene set in the 1970s was shot on St. Simons’ East Beach. We also learned that Stone Mountain Park served as the backdrop for a camping scene. And Fayetteville is where the supermarket was filmed.
Then, the scene where we see Rose the Har in some park was shot in Stone Mountain Park, which is situated just 15 miles east of Atlanta and first opened on April 14, 1965. The two primary features of the park are Stone Mountain, a huge quartz monzonite dome with a base circle of more than five miles and a peak of 1,686 feet, along with Stone Mountain Lake, which is a 363-acre body of water in the middle of the park.
The tree stump that Rose the Hat can be seen sitting on could have been a prop, or it may have been taken out of the park after the movie was finished.
