It is well known that Daredevil: Born Again went through a major creative shift during production. The decision was made to align the new series more closely with the original Daredevil show, ensuring continuity for long-time fans.
So far, this choice has benefited the series, bringing back familiar elements that made the original a success. However, certain tragic events occur that no production team can control.
One of these unfortunate events was the passing of actor Kamar de los Reyes in 2023. Best known for his roles in One Life to Live and the Call of Duty: Black Ops games, de los Reyes was set to play a significant role in Daredevil: Born Again.
His character is not just a minor figure in the story but a crucial vigilante fighting to protect New York City. His presence adds depth to the show’s themes of justice and corruption. The second episode pays tribute to him, honoring his contributions to the project.

Episode 2 Slows Down but Focuses on Legal Drama
Following the shocking events of the first episode—Foggy Nelson’s (Elden Henson) death, Bullseye’s (Wilson Bethel) return, and Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) winning the mayoral election—the second episode takes a slower, more methodical approach. The action sequences take a step back to allow the show to focus on Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) legal battles.
This shift stays true to the core identity of the original Daredevil series, which always balanced action with intense courtroom drama. Instead of solving problems with his fists, Matt tries to seek justice through the legal system.
This approach makes for a compelling story, as it raises questions about how the law views vigilantes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Shows like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law have shown similar ideas, but Daredevil: Born Again delivers them with a more serious and dramatic tone.
Wilson Fisk’s New Role as Mayor Brings Tension
Wilson Fisk is officially the new mayor of New York City. His election victory was overwhelming, despite having many critics. He insists that he has changed and wants to lead the city fairly, but his actions suggest otherwise.
From the very beginning, Fisk makes his opinions on superheroes clear. In his inaugural speech, he strongly condemns Daredevil, the Punisher (Jon Bernthal), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland). While Spider-Man does not appear in the show due to Sony’s ownership of the character, the reference acknowledges his place in the MCU.
As Fisk celebrates his win on New Year’s Eve, a man named Hector Ayala (played by Kamar de los Reyes) witnesses an assault in the subway. Two men are brutally attacking someone, and Ayala steps in to stop them. He skillfully takes them down, but during the fight, one of the attackers falls in front of a moving train.
The other pulls out a gun and reveals himself as a police officer. Suddenly, what seemed like a heroic rescue turns into something far more complicated. Ayala unknowingly stopped an act of police brutality, which puts him in immediate danger.
Corrupt members of the NYPD see Ayala as a threat. They capture him and beat him in an effort to send a message. Matt Murdock overhears what is happening and decides to represent Ayala in court.
His law partner, Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James), warns him not to get involved, but Matt follows his instincts. This choice brings the series back to its legal drama roots, reminding fans why Daredevil stands out among other superhero shows.
Wilson Fisk Faces Challenges in Office
While Matt Murdock prepares to defend Hector Ayala, Wilson Fisk begins putting his plans into motion as mayor. He presents himself as a leader who will make real changes. One of his first actions is fixing a long-standing issue in the city’s infrastructure by ordering a blocked road to be repaired immediately. These decisions make him appear like a leader who cares for the people.
However, Fisk’s administration is not without problems. His wife, Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), shows little interest in playing the role of the mayor’s supportive spouse. Instead, she focuses on expanding their criminal empire. Her lack of public appearances concerns Fisk’s team, as it affects his image.
To strengthen his public persona, Fisk agrees to an interview with BB Urich (Genneya Walton), a freelance journalist. BB is the niece of Ben Urich (Vondie Curtis-Hall), the reporter who helped expose Fisk’s crimes in Daredevil Season 1. What BB may not realize is that Fisk personally killed her uncle. This history creates a tense situation, as Fisk must carefully manage his interactions with BB.
Another problem arises with the police commissioner (Michael Gaston), who refuses to cooperate with Fisk. The commissioner sees Fisk as an untrustworthy criminal, despite his new title. Fisk first tries persuasion, but when that fails, he resorts to blackmail. He forces the commissioner to fall in line, proving that his old ways have not completely disappeared.
Matt Murdock Faces a Tougher Fight Than Expected
Hector Ayala’s case takes an unexpected turn when it is revealed that he is actually the vigilante known as White Tiger. This revelation makes Murdock’s job much harder, as it gives the prosecution a stronger case against Ayala.
Murdock struggles to decide what the right course of action is. He seeks advice from his girlfriend, Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva), who happens to be a therapist. Meanwhile, Wilson Fisk and Vanessa attempt to repair their marriage.
Fisk, wanting to maintain the image of a reformed man, agrees to attend couples counseling. The therapist they choose turns out to be Heather Glenn, which creates a dangerous connection between her and Matt Murdock. If the Fisks discover this link, it could put Heather in a very difficult position.
As Matt continues investigating Ayala’s case, he tracks down a key witness who could prove Ayala’s innocence. However, corrupt police officers arrive at the same time, trying to eliminate the witness before the truth can be revealed. One of these officers has a tattoo of the Punisher’s logo with an American flag, suggesting ties to dangerous vigilante factions.
A fight breaks out, and Matt Murdock is forced to take action. The scene reminds viewers that while he wants to fight for justice in the courtroom, he cannot abandon his life as Daredevil. His days as a crimefighter are far from over.
