Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series has been making people laugh out loud for more than 20 years. However, Larry David was making people laugh long before he was cast in the much-loved leading role.
He is, after all, a co-creator of Seinfeld (1989–1998), possibly the most successful comedy series ever produced in terms of both numbers and critical acclaim. It’s no secret that Jason Alexander’s George Costanza is meant to be a parody of Larry David, even if co-creator Jerry Seinfeld is undoubtedly the show’s main character.
Fans of the popular sitcom Seinfeld rapidly developed a craving for more of Larry David’s witty and sardonic sense of humour after the show’s official 1998 finale. Fortunately, they wouldn’t have to wait long because Larry David would be collaborating with HBO on a brand-new series just two years after the show’s finale.
Not only was Larry David going to write and perform in the episodic comedy series called Curb Your Enthusiasm, but he would also play an exaggerated version of himself. In addition, David and the other members of the show’s creative team were free to make the program as vulgar and profanity-filled as they pleased because HBO was airing it instead of network television.
Recap
“Atlanta’s” opening sequences bring us up to date on the situation following the conclusion of Season 11 a few years ago. To Larry’s chagrin, Young Larry has become a tremendous hit, and on the strength of it, the annoying Maria Sofia has somehow become a breakout celebrity.
Regarding Larry, he continues to reside with Irma while marking the days until he can quit their relationship. Her sponsor informed him that she would not be able to cope with their breakup for at least half a year. These two issues are probably going to be season-long side stories.
As with all previous episodes, or at least most of them, “Atlanta” is a maze of short-term subplots that all look perfectly unique but end up merging throughout the show in clever and rewarding ways. Maria is in this episode, but the main focus is on her fat dog Pechuca.
Preview
We might see more of Auntie Rae because Larry, who was jailed at the end of the premiere, must still be detained in Atlanta. Seeing Jeff and Susie this season will be pleasant as well, given they were absent from the debut. Even while it would be good to have less Maria Sofia, I expect Leon to have stayed behind in Atlanta as well.
