Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem was originally conceived as an online game before disappointing survey results prompted the development team to change direction. Producer Masachika Kawata revealed the scrapped concept in Nikkei Entertainment’s Biohazard 30th Special magazine, explaining how Capcom returned to the survival horror elements that define the franchise.
According to Kawata, director Koshi Nakanishi initially pursued an online-focused experience. However, feedback gathered through a survey conducted during development was unfavorable, leading the team to abandon that approach and prioritize horror instead. The revelation offers a look into the development changes behind the latest mainline Resident Evil installment.
Why Capcom Introduced Grace Alongside Leon
Kawata also explained that Leon Kennedy was initially planned as the game’s protagonist. However, the development team felt his combat expertise would make it difficult to maintain the vulnerability needed for a horror-focused experience.

As Kawata explained,
“horror wouldn’t work with just Leon, who is highly skilled in combat,”
prompting Capcom to introduce Grace as a new character. Her inclusion allowed the developers to emphasize fear and tension alongside Leon’s action-oriented gameplay.
The comments highlight how Capcom’s creative decisions evolved during development rather than following the original concept unchanged. Resident Evil Requiem is available on Nintendo Switch 2, alongside other supported platforms. Capcom has also announced a story expansion, with further content planned for the survival horror title.
