Bondi Rescue is a long-running Australian reality series about the lives and work of a group of lifeguards on the beaches of Sydney. Across the years, the series has chronicled how these men go about their daily lives on the job, and they mix things up with personal experiences, testimonials, and fun moments of life on the beach. Think of Baywatch, an Aussie reality show style, and you will get Bondi Rescue, that’s on its seventeenth season and in the bottom part of its run with interesting stories.
Bondi Rescue incorporates the clever use of waterproof cameras on surfboards, drone shots, and a very talented camera crew that captures how these lifeguards rescue people who get dragged by the currents on the beaches of Sydney. While some rescues are utterly funny and sometimes ridiculous, others are pretty serious and involve elaborate maneuvers.
Bondi Rescue Season 17 Episode 8 Recap
The episode begins with a few testimonials by Beardy on what it feels like to work at the lifeguard service. Then, the show pays homage to a fellow lifeguard, Terry, who died of prostate cancer at 63 years old. Then, the show moves on to a lifeguard surfing competition on the beach. The lifeguards take their boards to the sea, make a circle, join hands, and go in prayer in homage to Terry. The segment is emotional because it shows a lot of the brotherhood of these men dedicated to paying service to the beachgoers.
Then, the show talks about a dangerous part of the beach full of rocks that are very frequented by swimmers and surfers, but its dangerous currents and tides tend to drag people there. We see some rescues, nothing very elaborate; one that includes a fat lady is particularly funny because when a lifeguard comes to aid her in his surfboard, the board keeps capsizing because the woman can’t seem to get her balance.
The show switches to a couple of girls who report to the lifeguards about the disappearance of one of their friends on the shore. The lifeguards kick off the search, radio each other, and then the search begins. The guards set on a quest, but as it turns out, the dude was just out for some snacks and sodas and to the bathroom, but since he had a fight with her friends, the girls got very worried.
Finally, we see the top-level competition between the lifeguards, which includes a 5K run, a freestyle swim across the bay, a paddle run, and a surf competition that has everyone hyped up because it involves peer recognition and bragging rights. We see pranks, banter, and lots of competitive spirits. The dudes give out their best, then hop into the water, and the underwater takes are incredible. All in all, it was a very fun episode to watch.
