We all love and want a good mafia story in our lives. Even better if it includes a cast full of good-looking black actors. Black Mafia Family, better known as BMF, is a mafia crime series following the story of how a black family finds themselves involved in trafficking drugs and laundering money and how they rise to the top with it.
The series released its first season on September 26th, 2021, and launched its second season on January 6th, 2023. The show is based on the true story of two brothers who rose from the hollow grounds of Detroit and went on to become one of the most influential organized crime gangs in America at their time.
The show stars Rusell Hornsby from Grimm and Seven Seconds as Charles Flenory. Young actor Demetrius Flenory Jr., son of Demetrius Flenory, is cast as Demetrius Meech Flenory. Eric Kofi-Abrefa plays the role of Lamar Silas, along with Myles Truitt as B-Mickie.
La La Anthony plays Markeisha Taylor alongside a huge supporting cast. Since its release, the show has received mixed reviews from both viewers and critics. The show is available for streaming on Prime Videos.
BMF Season 2 Episode 9 Storyline
The Black Mafia Family, better known by its alias BMF, is in the middle of airing its second season and has released its ninth episode on March 10th, 2023. The story is based in the 1980s in Detroit, Michigan, and how the place gave birth to America’s one of the most dangerous gangs. The story has two main characters, Demetrius ‘Big Meech’ Flenory and Terry ‘Southwest Tee’ Flenory.
With the second season, Meech and Terry find themselves completely involved in the drugs business and are looking forward to expanding it to other territories. Episode nine is titled ‘High Treason,’ Atlanta is the first place where they establish themselves, so the BMF gang takes a road trip to the city. They are dependent on their supposed connections in the city, Goldie and Ty.
The trip faced some obstacles but seemed to end just fine. There is some scuffle among the gang members, and Meech is forced to make tough decisions. While the gang is traveling, Kevin gets his house broken into, and he goes to talk about it to detective Jin. Meech meets up with Goldie first and then with Ty.
Lamar and Monique talk about their daughter and how they would support her through college. Lamar promises to be a better man, but just after a while, things go awry, and he ends up killing Monique. While Alvin and Lamar are dealing with her body, Zoe calls and realizes something may be up.
Lucille and Charles’ relationship continues to suffer since Lucille found a motel receipt in the latter’s bag. Meech and Terry mingle some more with Goldie and Ty. They attend parties together and expand their network. It is during one of these parties that Terry asks for Ty’s help in getting rid of B-Mickie.
Detective Bryant and detective Jin do something similar to a sleepover at detective Bryant’s house, and she tries to snoop around his place to get something on B-Mickie. Lucille confronts Charles about Mable, the woman he was cheating on Lucille. Lucille and Nicole, her daughter, stand up to Charles, asking him to leave their house.
B-Mickie gets a hint that someone wants him gone. He is on an alert, and when the hitman fails to shoot him, a shootout occurs in the parking lot. Ty gets shot and dies, and Meech is left to tell his wife about the news. Terry and B-Mickie are on a roof discussing escape route plans, but B-Mickie pulls a gun on him. Terry comes just in time, and he points his gun at B-Mickie’s head but refuses to shoot him.
The episode ends with Markeisha calling Terry to tell him that Boom has been taken by the police and that detective Bryant had photos of Markeisha and Terry sleeping together that she planned on showing to Boom to provoke him to talk about Terry and his illegal businesses. In a rage, Boom ends up telling the detectives everything about what the Flennory brothers stole from the K-9.
BMF Season 2 Episode 9 Review
Created by Randy Huggins, the Black Mafia Family is a show produced for Starz network. The show has tried its best to portray the story of the two brothers as authentically as possible, though it has a few creative instances. Right from the start, we are introduced to the brothers and their hopes and dreams. The show has tried to make them seem like two ordinary people that are relatable but also just happened to become the leaders of a scary mafia gang.
We are introduced to the brothers when they were kids, followed by their adulthood which is thrown right at our faces. The show has definitely missed the chance to create a more impactful storyline by introducing the change that brothers went through from being innocent children to being forced by nature to turn into cold drugs abusing, and selling monsters. We do not get to see the struggles or the moral conflicts they might have faced as they made the decision to go down this path.
The story is about money and control and how the brother initially started only to put their family out of poverty but ended up getting addicted to not just the drugs but also the power their position brought. The series is supposed to tell the tale of the two brothers, but it does feel like it glorifies the actions of the gang. The series has missed out on several points of explanation and has quite a few loose ends.
Two seasons into the show and we barely know anything about how the gang came to be or how did the Flenory family find out about the gang. Not only is the story lacking, but it also feels like a stretch with unnecessary storylines and characters. Demetrius Fenory Jr. is cast in the show to play the role of his father, and though it may seem like the perfect role for the young man, he clearly lacks his skills. The performance is not convincing enough, and he fails to portray it with depth.
Even so, he has his moments to shine. He shares amazing chemistry with his brother, Terry, played by Da’Vinchi. A lot of the actors from the main cast, especially La La Anthony as Markeisha Taylor, have done an amazing job with their characters. The show seems to be suffering because of its poor writing and because of the fact that even with so much material, the makers cannot seem to create an engaging storyline.
A lot of the time, it makes criminal activities look ‘cool’ and almost justified, which is wrong on so many levels. Since the story of the Black Mafia Family is so predictable, the makers bring twists to it by killing beloved characters without any remorse. Episode 9 of Season two of the show brought on two deaths that left the viewers devastated.
Our Verdict
The death of Ty is heartbreaking for his wife, and the death of Monique feels almost like a learning lesson to never lower your guard. These two moments helped the audience feel more connected to the characters. The show has also indulged in using a lot of stereotypical gangster slang specific to black people which, in all honesty, just takes away from the seriousness of the show.
This episode also had an important moment between Terry, Meech, and B-Mickie. This scene showed the actors’ potential to display a variety of emotions instead of being one-directional all the time. This was the penultimate episode of this season, even though there are a lot of questions that remain unanswered and a lot of loose strings hanging around.
The second season of the show is very soon going to an end, leaving the fans curious as to what obstacles the Flenory brothers will face in their future drug trafficking ventures. With its predictable story and mildly interesting characters, the Black Mafia Family still manages to put out a well enough story of the difficult choices the Flenory brothers were forced to make and how it impacted their relationship with their family. We give this episode a rating of 3.3 out of 5.
