From the creators of Vikings, comes an American Western-inspired story with Tom Blythe in the lead as Billy The Kid, now on its second season when all the tension, lawlessness, problems, ups and downs of the time come together in a period piece that has all the aspects that make you want to binge watch the series.
In the sophomore season, things have gone a bit awry in Lincoln County, a place that’s now torn with rival gangs shooting at each other. Bear in mind, that Epix and MGM+ took some creative licenses to make Billy The Kid’s screen adaptation a little more palpable for the audience, but the gist of the historical facts is there. Now, without any further ado, let’s see what went down in Lincoln County last week.
Recap
As we’ve seen in the first couple of seasons, Billy The Kid narrated how things started to boil up between John Tunstall (who dies in this episode), Lawrence Murphy, and each of the members of their gang.
These two and their cliques have been in harsh competition in Lincoln County, and now, Murphy, along with Thomas Catron, are going to unleash hell on earth. So, Billy The Kid and The Regulators are out to set things straight with Jesse Evans and his clique.
In keeping with the previous episode, Billy the Kid season 2, episode 3 opens with Sheriff William Brady going into John Tunstall’s well-known grocery store and bank in Lincoln, New Mexico.
Brady’s intentions are once again questioned by Dick Brewer, the manager of the Tunstall store and the eventual leader of the Regulators. Brewer implies that Brady lacks the legal authority to close down Tunstall’s business and is circumventing the law in order to work with the powerful and affluent Murphy House.
In episode three, Brady not only targets Tunstall’s store but also demands Brewer’s deputy badge, claiming that Brewer’s legal status as a law enforcement officer was revoked by Thomas Catron.
Brady is aware that Tunstall’s attorney McSween’s attempt to resolve the case through the legal system will be futile because the courts were also under the control of Murphy’s House. Brady is called out by McSween, who openly charges him of bribery. Shortly after, the normally unassuming Brady exhibits a chilly side and tells McSween and Brewer to stay quiet.
In yet another attempt by Murphy and Brady to use the legal system against the Englishman, Jesse Evans and his gang are dispatched to reclaim Tunstall’s horses and cattle. Upon discovering that Tunstall’s ranch is empty when Jeese and his group arrive, Jesse resolves that their search will continue.
To finally put an end to this feud, Jesse rallies his group to pursue Tunstall. Initially reluctant, Jesse’s “Boys” eventually consent and go with their leader, ambushing Tunstall at his ranch while Billy and his gang go on a lunch hunt. Billy is horrified to see Jesse and his group ride up to the sitting duck Tunstall and shoot him in the cold, silently.
Billy will avenge the death of Tunstall after he sees his death. The real-life Billy the Kid made an oath to murder everyone responsible for Tunstall’s death, particularly because Tunstall was the only powerful person who ever treated Billy like an equal.
Following Tunstall’s passing, his surviving followers united under the direction of Alex McSween, who remained committed to working with the honorable Judge Wilson to pursue legal redress for Tunstall’s passing and the Murphy House’s corruption. The remaining members of Tunstall’s enforcers, dubbed the Regulators by Billy the Kid, take the lead.
Billy the Kid portrays the Regulators as a group of roughly twenty men, including Dick Brewer, Charlie Bowdre, and Tom O’Folliard. The only aim of the Regulators was to exact revenge on Tunstall for his unjustifiable death by any means necessary, including breaking the law.
