American Horror Stories Season 2 Episode 4 Recap
A town in New England in the 18th century was completely destroyed by smallpox. Walter, the town priest, learns from Thomas about the tales that eating the hearts of recently deceased victims helps treat smallpox. Walter accomplishes this and exhorts his church to do the same. Celeste, a prostitute who had attempted to inform the locals that Walter is dishonest, is shunned by them. She finds refuge with Delilah, a milkmaid, and they start dating.
Delilah knows that she and Celeste are immune to smallpox because they already have cowpox. Delilah pleads with the villagers to stop eating the hearts straight off the corpses of the dead and offers them milk from an afflicted cow to ward off the plague. Walter openly criticizes her. He stabs Thomas, who then discloses that Celeste is the mother of his son Edward, and assaults Celeste. Before Thomas succumbs to his injuries, Delilah murders Walter, but Thomas then slays her. Edward reiterates Walter’s remark that a milkmaid is dirty and slices out her heart to eat, oblivious to the fact that Celeste is his biological mother.
