Anime fans will soon get another chance to experience Akira on the big screen. Nearly four decades after its original release, Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment have announced that Katsuhiro Otomo’s iconic cyberpunk film will return to select theaters across the United States and Canada on September 4, 2026, in a restored 4K IMAX presentation.

A 4K Restoration Returns to North American Theaters

The version of Akira returning to theaters this September is based on the film’s 4K restoration, which first premiered in Japan in May 2020. After screening in the U.K. earlier this year, the restored film is now heading to IMAX theaters across the United States and Canada, giving audiences a chance to experience the classic anime on the largest screens available.

Tickets for the September 4 screenings are now on sale. Fans can choose between the original Japanese audio with English subtitles or an English-dubbed version.

This makes the release accessible to both longtime viewers and first-time audiences.

Crunchyroll Highlights Akira’s Lasting Legacy

In its official announcement, Crunchyroll highlighted Akira as one of the most influential anime films ever made, emphasizing its lasting impact on both Japanese animation and audiences worldwide.

The company also released a new trailer and key visual to mark the film’s upcoming 4K IMAX theatrical re-release in the United States and Canada. The promotional materials showcase the restored visuals that fans can expect to see on the big screen.

Alongside the announcement, Crunchyroll invited both longtime fans and first-time viewers to experience Akira in theaters when the restored 4K version opens on September 4, 2026.

What Is Akira About?

Akira is set in the futuristic city of Neo-Tokyo, rebuilt decades after a catastrophic explosion destroyed the original Tokyo. The cyberpunk anime follows a society marked by political unrest, street gangs, and secret government projects.

The story centers on teenage biker Shotaro Kaneda and his childhood friend Tetsuo Shima. After an encounter with a mysterious child possessing psychic abilities, Tetsuo becomes involved in a classified military experiment that awakens extraordinary powers within him.

As Tetsuo struggles to control his growing abilities, Kaneda sets out to save his friend while uncovering the truth behind the government’s secret project. Their journey leads to a conflict that threatens the future of Neo-Tokyo and forms the heart of Akira’s story.

Why Akira Remains a Classic

Based on Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga of the same name, Akira is widely regarded as one of the most influential anime films ever made. Since its release in 1988, it has introduced countless international viewers to anime and has inspired later science fiction works, including Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop, and The Matrix.

Otomo wrote and directed the film, which was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (now TMS Entertainment). He has continued working in animation on projects such as Memories and Steamboy, and is currently developing new works through his studio, OVAL GEAR.

What Fans Can Expect

The upcoming Akira theatrical re-release will present the film in a restored 4K version optimized for IMAX screens. The upgraded presentation is designed to showcase the anime’s detailed visuals and cinematic scale like never before.

Audiences will also experience the film’s iconic action sequences and sound design in IMAX format, offering a more immersive way to revisit Neo-Tokyo on the big screen.

With screenings beginning on September 4 across select theaters in the United States and Canada, the re-release gives longtime fans and first-time viewers a chance to experience Akira in theaters nearly four decades after its original debut.
