What Is Witch Hat Atelier About?

Witch Hat Atelier follows Coco, a young girl from a small village who dreams of becoming a witch. In her world, magic exists, but it is kept secret from ordinary people. Most believe that only those born with magical talent can become witches, leaving Coco convinced that her dream can never come true.

Everything changes when she meets Qifrey, a traveling witch. After witnessing him cast a spell, Coco uncovers a hidden truth about how magic really works. A life-changing incident soon leads her to become Qifrey’s apprentice, beginning a journey filled with magical discoveries, powerful secrets, and new challenges.

The series explores themes of curiosity, determination, friendship, and the responsibility that comes with wielding magic.

The Studio and Creative Team Behind Witch Hat Atelier

Season 1 of Witch Hat Atelier was animated by BUG FILMS and directed by Ayumu Watanabe, whose previous works include Children of the Sea, Summer Time Rendering, and several Doraemon films. Jun Shinohara served as assistant director, while Hiroaki Kojima worked as the anime’s producer.

The series featured character designs and chief animation direction by Kairi Unabara, with music composed by Yuka Kitamura, known for her work on Elden Ring. Hiroshi Seko handled the series composition and scripts, Ryōta Gotō served as art director, Naomi Nakano was the color key artist, and Tadashi Kitaoka oversaw compositing and photography.

The anime’s opening theme, “Kaze no Anthem feat. suis from yorushika,” was performed by Eve and suis. Throughout the season, Nakamura Hak performed three ending themes: “Tada Utsukushii no Noroi,” “Yoru ni Ukabu,” and “Hikari.”

What Director Said About Adapting the Manga

Ahead of the Season 1 finale, director Ayumu Watanabe spoke about the challenge of adapting Kamome Shirahama’s Witch Hat Atelier manga into an anime. Watanabe described the project as a reckless undertaking, highlighting the difficulty of bringing Shirahama’s highly detailed artwork and watercolor-inspired style to animation.

The production’s scale was also reflected in comments from Rena Motomura, the Japanese voice of Coco. Motomura revealed that Episode 5, which features a battle between Qifrey and a dragon, required more than 20,000 drawings to complete. The figure illustrates the level of detail and craftsmanship that BUG FILMS invested in faithfully recreating the manga’s distinctive visual style.
