One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Disney’s Dragon Striker has now been answered by the creative team behind the series. While many sports anime feature flashy supernatural abilities that primarily exist during competition, the creators wanted Dragon Striker to establish a world where magic is an everyday reality rather than a spectacle reserved for the field.
Speaking during a roundtable interview at Anime Expo 2026, series creators Sylvain Dos Santos, Charles Lefebvre, and Paul McKeown explained that this decision became the foundation of the show’s world-building. Their comments also hint that viewers have only seen a small part of the larger universe, especially after Disney renewed the series for a second season.
Dragon Striker’s magic was designed to exist beyond every match
According to Dos Santos, the idea originated from their love of sports anime such as Captain Tsubasa and Inazuma Eleven. While those series inspired the team’s passion for the genre, they often left one question unanswered: how do extraordinary powers actually fit into the world?
“We wanted to create a mix of fantasy and sports where magic is at the center of the story and the universe,”
Dos Santos said during the interview with Manga Mavericks.
He explained that when dragons appear in Dragon Striker, every character can see them, and magical attacks have real consequences beyond the audience’s imagination.
“In the first episode you see magic before you see the first game. Everybody understands magic is all around the world.”
Lefebvre expanded on that idea by revealing that the decision was intentional because the team wanted the supernatural elements to influence far more than soccer itself.
“It was really important for us to understand they can use magic outside of the games,”
he said.
“I think that will explain many things in the future.”
That statement suggests the series’ mythology will continue expanding beyond the tournament structure as future episodes explore the broader fantasy world.
Blending fantasy and sports became the team’s biggest creative challenge
Building that universe, however, proved to be one of the production’s most difficult tasks. Lefebvre admitted that balancing competitive sports with epic fantasy required careful pacing so neither element overshadowed the other.
Rather than stretching matches across multiple episodes like some classic sports anime, the creators chose a faster approach inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion. Lefebvre explained that they preferred short, intense matches that delivered maximum excitement while leaving room to develop the world and its characters.
The staff also emphasized that creating memorable characters remained a major priority. Dos Santos described making the fictional world feel authentic as one of his biggest challenges, while McKeown said the team wanted every viewer to find someone they could relate to.
The creators also expressed excitement over seeing fan cosplay and fan fiction, calling it one of the greatest rewards of making the series. Lefebvre added that hearing children become passionate about Dragon Striker represents the ultimate success, describing it as a chance to “pass the torch” to a new generation of anime fans.
With Season 2 already confirmed, the team’s comments indicate that the fantasy mythology introduced in the opening episodes is only the beginning, with the role of magic outside the soccer field expected to become even more significant as the story continues.
