Netflix is doubling down on its live-action anime adaptations, and its latest endeavor is BET, a live-action adaptation of the popular series Kakegurui. The streaming service has revealed an impressive cast for the series, including Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O’Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, and Ryan Sutherland.

BET, currently in production in Toronto, Canada, draws inspiration from the original Kakegurui manga and anime. Set in an elite boarding school, the series follows a group of students navigating the school’s ruthless hierarchy and engaging in underground gambling.

Simon Barry is at the helm of BET, directing and writing the drama, which comprises ten episodes. The production aims to introduce the world of Kakegurui to a broader audience beyond Japan.

Netflix provided a brief synopsis of BET, offering insight into the plot: “In BET, the boarding school’s hierarchy is upturned when Yumeko, a mysterious transfer student arrives from Japan with a dark secret and a gambling prowess that puts her in the crosshairs of the powerful Student Council. Ultimately, her revenge quest threatens to upend the school’s status quo entirely.”

For those unfamiliar with Kakegurui, the original series debuted in March 2014, written by Homura Kawamoto and illustrated by Toru Nakamura.

The manga is ongoing, and it received a successful anime adaptation from MAPPA starting in September 2017. A live-action drama for Kakegurui premiered in Japan in 2018 and found popularity on Netflix. Now, Netflix is investing in a Hollywood adaptation of the high-stakes thriller with BET.
