Darby Hart, a tech-savvy hacker and Gen Z amateur sleuth, is the new detective at the center of the mystery series A Murder at the End of the World. A reclusive billionaire extends an invitation to Darby and eight other visitors to join him for a retreat at a stunning but distant place.
Before the murderer claims more lives, Darby needs to use every resource at her disposal to show that the other guest’s death was the result of murder, despite a plethora of conflicting interests.
Emma Corrin as Darby Hart, Clive Owen as the billionaire, and Harrison Dickinson and Marling in undefined roles round up the main cast of the series. Though Corrin has acted in the film My Policeman and is scheduled to star in Deadpool 3, her most well-known part is that of Princess Dianna from The Crown season 4, for which she received an Emmy.
The highlights of Owen’s career include Children of Men, Inside Man, Sin City, and most recently, Impeachment: American Crime Story, in which he portrayed former President Bill Clinton. Owen is an Oscar-nominated actor. After starring in The King’s Man, Where the Crawdads Sing, and Triangle of Sadness, which was nominated for Best Picture, Dickinson’s career has taken off in the last few years.

Darby Hart, an amateur detective who investigates murder cases that law enforcement has either given up on entirely or struck a dead end with, has always been captivated by the crime. Emma Corrin plays Darby Hart. Her early years were spent assisting her dad at different crime sites as the daughter of the local medical examiner; therefore, she didn’t really cross off any important social milestones.
Nonetheless, she uses the internet as a resource to communicate with other “citizen detectives” (just picture her and Misty Quigley together!) and puts together hints that could have otherwise gone missing. She eventually runs with Bill Farrah (Harris Dickinson), a hacker and programmer who ends up becoming her collaborator in more ways than one, despite the fact that their divergent philosophies of how to solve cold cases threaten to separate them.
Darby’s debut novel, which she dedicated to her personal hero, Lee (Marling), a fringe hacker with a notorious and known reputation, is the result of her extensive investigation into a serial murder case. Darby thought highly of Lee even if her online behavior was illegal, at least up to the point when she was doxxed, stalked, and eventually had to go into hiding for her own safety.
The only information available about Lee’s whereabouts since then is that she is married to the reclusive tech billionaire Andy Ronson (Clive Owen). Darby mentions Lee at her most recent book reading, and she soon gets an invitation to a private retreat that Ronson is hosting.
Darby flies to an impressive, distant site with eight other guests who have been invited, and it just so happens to have all the modern conveniences one could ask for. However, Darby faces obstacles in her quest to show that a group member was murdered and that the murderer was one of them when a group member is found dead.
The setting of A Murder at the End of the World gives it an advantage over many contemporary murder mysteries, even if assembling your cast of characters under one roof is still a surefire method to get your whodunit going.
The setting of Ronson’s retreat for his selected guests—which is soon revealed to be Iceland—makes the narrative feel even more cramped and restricted until a more menacing blizzard confines the guests in with one another.
