Who was Eugene? Why was a WWE character based on him?
Eugene Palermo was the son of referee Bucky Palermo. His father introduced him to the world of Wrestling, and the boy took an interest in it despite having down syndrome. Bucky Palermo worked mostly at the matches surrounding their city Pittsburgh. The boy also helped in any way he could, and he entered the big shots thanks to his dad, as he did chores to help wrestlers before the match and did minor chores.
But the story of him being used as a character begin with a man named Rip Rogers. Rogers’s son was autistic, so he thought of making a character with his features. But he couldn’t land on a name. And this is where Nick Dinsmore comes in. He had seen Eugene work at the wrestling matches a few times, so he suggested his name. Rogers agreed after he saw Eugene in person.
