Bryan Baeumler considered a career in law, but his passion for construction and engineering ultimately led him down a different path.
From the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, he operated an air cargo business in Canada before transitioning into television.
He became a host and presenter for HGTV and HGTV Canada, starring in several successful construction-focused programs, including Disaster DIY, Disaster DIY: Cottage Edition, Leave It to Bryan, and House of Bryan.
Among these, House of Bryan, which followed Bryan and his wife Sarah as they built their family home, became particularly successful, earning the distinction of being the highest-rated series in HGTV Canada’s history. Recognized for his engaging hosting style, Bryan won a Gemini Award for his work on HGTV.

Early Life
Born on April 18, 1974, in Oakville, Canada, Bryan Baeumler grew up in a household where hands-on skills were encouraged. His father, an aircraft engineer, played a major role in developing Bryan’s interest in construction, as he often observed and learned from his father’s work.
During his childhood summers, he actively participated in building the family cottage, further honing his skills. By the time he was 14, Bryan had already established his own handyman business, taking on odd jobs for neighbors.
After completing high school, Bryan pursued higher education at the University of Western Ontario in 1992. In 1996, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Business.
Career
Even before graduating from college, Bryan was involved in business, working in an air cargo company, which he managed until 2003. Eventually, he shifted his focus to construction, launching his own company, Baeumler Quality Construction and Renovations Inc., where he serves as president and CEO.
His expertise in construction and renovation caught the attention of HGTV Canada, which was in search of a host for a new show, Disaster DIY. The show centered around homeowners who attempted their own renovations but ended up failing, requiring professional intervention.
Bryan was chosen as the host, and the series, set in the Greater Toronto Area, ran from 2007 to 2011. In 2008, his work on Disaster DIY earned him a Gemini Award for “Best Host in a Lifestyle/Practical Information, or Performing Arts Program or Series.”
With his growing recognition, HGTV created another show specifically for Bryan, House of Bryan, which followed him, his family, and his apprentice, Adam, as they built homes. The show became a massive hit, ranking as the highest-rated series in HGTV Canada’s history.
It aired from 2010 to 2015 before being succeeded by Bryan Inc., which premiered in the fall of 2016. This new series focused on Bryan and Sarah as they purchased, renovated, and resold properties. Bryan Inc. aired until 2018 before going on hiatus.
In addition to his television success, Bryan launched Baeumler Approved in 2011, a website designed to connect homeowners with reliable home renovation and repair service providers across Canada.
The platform gained popularity, eventually leading to the development of a peer-to-peer mobile app in 2018, further facilitating connections between homeowners and professionals.
In 2015, Bryan also ventured into writing, publishing a book titled Measure Twice: Tips and Tricks from the Pros to Help You Avoid the Most Common DIY Disasters.
While balancing multiple projects, Bryan also took on the role of host for another HGTV series, Leave It to Bryan. In this show, he worked with homeowners to determine which home renovations were the most essential. The series aired from 2012 until 2017.
In 2017, Bryan and Sarah made a bold decision to purchase an abandoned beachfront resort in South Andros, Bahamas. Their journey to renovate the resort became the foundation of a new HGTV show, The Island of Bryan.
The remote location presented significant challenges, as building supplies were only delivered every one to two weeks, making the renovation process particularly complex.
Throughout the project, the Baeumler family lived on the island, with their children initially being homeschooled before attending local schools in the Bahamas.
The renovation culminated in the opening of the Caerula Mar Club resort in December 2019. The show premiered on HGTV Canada in 2019 and was later repackaged as Renovation Island for U.S. audiences in 2020.
Following The Island of Bryan, Bryan collaborated with HGTV once again to develop a new concept, which resulted in Renovation Resort.
The show, which premiered in Canada in 2023, follows Canadian celebrity Scott McGillivray as he purchases a lakeside resort and enlists Bryan’s expertise for the renovation. The series incorporates a competition format, featuring multiple teams of contractors competing to refurbish various cabins on the property.
Due to his prominence in the Canadian television industry, Bryan has made guest appearances on several other HGTV programs.
He has served as a judge on Canada’s Handyman Challenge and Deck Wars and also contributed as a guest builder on Home to Win.
Personal Life
Bryan first met his future wife, Sarah, while they were both in high school, though their romantic relationship did not begin until years later when a mutual friend reintroduced them.
The couple eventually married in 2004 and have since welcomed four children: Quintyn, Charlotte, Lincoln, and Josephine. Over the years, their children have made occasional appearances on the various television shows their parents have been featured in.
