Geoffrey Owens, best known for his role as Elvin Tibideaux on The Cosby Show, reflects on the time he went viral for working at Trader Joe’s. In an interview on V-103 Atlanta, Owens shared how the initial backlash of job shaming quickly turned into overwhelming support from fans worldwide. At first, people were critical, but the positivity from others helped him through the difficult moment.
Owens starred on The Cosby Show from 1985 to 1992, but his return to public attention came in 2018. A customer took photos of him while he was working behind the register at a Trader Joe’s store, which led to media attention. Despite still pursuing acting, including a role in Mr. Santa: A Christmas Extravaganza, Owens admitted that his finances were not as secure as many might assume.
He revealed that he still struggles to make a living, despite his acting roles, noting that people often misunderstand the financial realities of the entertainment industry. “I struggle every day to make my ends meet,” Owens said. He also pointed out the common misconception about what middle-class actors earn, explaining that the reality of living off acting wages often doesn’t align with people’s perceptions.
Owens explained that his decision to work at Trader Joe’s stemmed from the financial challenges actors face, especially those with fewer consistent roles. “I’m not much better off now than I was then,” he shared. His transparency about his financial struggles highlighted the broader issue within the entertainment industry, where many actors work other jobs to support themselves.
Prior to the viral incident, Owens had quit his Trader Joe’s job, fearing that customers would continue to photograph him while he worked. However, he later returned to the grocery store, offering to take on extra hours. “Trader Joe’s is a wonderful place to work,” Owens said, expressing his gratitude for the company and its supportive environment. Though it’s unclear whether he regained employment at the store, Owens appreciated the opportunity to stay engaged in the Hollywood industry.
He also recalled the kindness he received during this challenging period, including offers of work from celebrities like Tyler Perry and 50 Cent. “For two weeks or more, I was one of the most famous people in the world,” he shared, noting how everywhere he went, people recognized him and offered kind words.
Owens also addressed the generous $20,000 donation from Nicki Minaj, which he chose not to keep. Instead, he donated it to charity, feeling it was the right thing to do at the time. “It didn’t seem right to keep it,” he said, acknowledging the “lovely, incredible” gesture from the rapper.
