The penultimate season of Outlander has only three episodes remaining, and the story is gaining momentum. In Episode 13, titled “Hello, Goodbye,” written by Madeleine Brestal and Evan McGahey and directed by Jan Matthys, some of the season’s most puzzling questions get answered.
We finally find out where Jemmy (Blake Johnston Miller) has been and get clues about Lord John Grey’s (David Berry) current situation.
However, the episode introduces new mysteries, including the presence of two very different Jeremiahs. One is reunited with his family, while the other is left behind for his own safety. Amid these revelations, the larger struggle continues to loom on the horizon.
Brianna’s Determined Effort to Save Jemmy
The episode opens with Brianna (Sophie Skelton) taking control of the situation after Rob Cameron (Chris Fulton) kidnaps her son Jemmy. She knocks Rob out with a pot, ties him up, and locks him in Lallybroch’s priest hole. This secretive hiding spot proves useful for holding Rob captive, though it no longer serves its original purpose in their time.
Brianna interrogates Rob using threats, physical force, and a strong-willed approach, but he refuses to reveal Jemmy’s location. When Brianna attempts to call the police for help, she discovers that Rob has cut the phone lines at Lallybroch.
While struggling to find a solution, Brianna notices her daughter Mandy (Rosa Morris) playing with a toy airplane, which gives her an idea. Brianna decides to drive around searching for Jem herself. She asks Mandy to act as a guide by playing a “hot or cold” game, using her instinctive bond with Jem to sense his presence nearby.
Meanwhile, Jem finds himself locked in the mines. He remembers Brianna’s story about how to flip breakers to turn the lights on and faces the tunnels by recalling key details.
Eventually, Jem emerges from the mine and appears on the service road, illuminated by the headlights of Brianna’s car. She rushes to him, and together they return to Lallybroch with Mandy and a police escort.
However, Brianna’s relief is short-lived. Upon arriving home, she discovers that Rob has escaped. To make matters worse, the police officers dismiss her concerns and even imply inappropriate assumptions about her relationship with Rob.
Frustrated but undeterred, Brianna ensures Jem and Mandy’s safety by sending them away with Ernie (Ciaron Kelly) and Fiona Buchan (Iona Claire). Fiona, Mrs. Graham’s granddaughter, becomes a trusted confidante as Brianna shares details about her husband Roger’s current whereabouts.
Ian and Rachel Celebrate a Joyous Wedding
In Philadelphia, the episode shifts to a lighter moment as Ian (John Bell) and Rachel (Izzy Meikle-Small) prepare for their wedding.
The joyous occasion is made even more special because Jamie (Sam Heughan), previously believed to be dead, is there to celebrate. Ian expresses gratitude for his uncle’s presence, especially since his parents cannot attend.
Before the ceremony, Ian confides in Jamie about his nervousness regarding their first night as husband and wife. Jamie shares a humorous and heartfelt story about his wedding night with Claire (Caitríona Balfe), offering Ian simple advice: take things slowly and pay attention to Rachel’s needs.
Rachel’s brother, Denzell (Joey Phillips), arrives just in time for the wedding. He informs Jamie about Lord John Grey, who has been missing since escaping captivity in the previous episode.
Jamie regrets his actions toward John, especially the violent confrontation that led to their fallout. However, with the wedding about to begin, there is little time for Jamie to dwell on his guilt.
The ceremony itself is unconventional but heartfelt. Rachel speaks about listening to God’s presence, though her prolonged speech makes some guests restless. Ian and Rachel exchange emotional vows that leave no dry eyes among their family and friends.
Later that evening, Ian and Rachel share an intimate and passionate wedding night. Ian recalls Jamie’s advice but soon discovers that Rachel has her own preferences, leading to a memorable and fulfilling experience for them both. Meanwhile, Jamie struggles to sleep, haunted by his actions toward Lord John Grey and the uncertain fate of his illegitimate son, William (Charles Vandervaart).
The next morning brings partial answers. Lord John Grey, now disguised as Bertram Armstrong, is found sleeping on the cold ground, evading capture by the Continental Army. As Ian and Rachel savor their newlywed bliss, Jamie dons his new uniform as a Brigadier General. Claire affectionately reminds him that he isn’t dragging her back to the battlefront—she chooses to stand by his side.
Roger Reunites with His Father
The episode also checks back in with Roger (Richard Rankin) and Buck (Diarmaid Murtagh) in 1739. While journeying through Scotland, Buck’s poetic musings about the mountains trigger a memory for Roger.
He recalls Brianna mentioning a strong pull near the dam where she works—a feeling similar to the stones’ energy. Roger suspects there might be a stone circle in the area that brought his father, Jeremiah, through time.
Their search leads them to a WWII survival kit, including rations and other supplies. At first, Roger wonders if Jem has traveled through the stones, but the discovery turns out to involve a local boy who found Roger’s father’s belongings. The boy shares that a strangely dressed man was spotted stealing a sheep before disappearing into the woods.
Roger and Buck eventually track down the man, identified as Jeremiah “Jerry” MacKenzie (Nicholas Ralph), wearing a sheepskin bomber jacket. Roger calls out to him using his nickname, stopping Jerry in his tracks.
Roger reveals historical facts to convince Jerry of his identity but carefully avoids sharing too much about the future. Jerry recounts how his plane crashed during a test flight and how he accidentally traveled through the stones.
As hunters close in on Jerry, Roger gives him a gem and urges him to return to his own time. He encourages Jerry by telling him that his actions will help win the war. Though tempted, Roger refrains from revealing his true identity as Jerry’s son.
After Jerry disappears through the stones, Roger realizes his journey to 1739 might have been about saving both Jeremiah figures—his father and his son.
What’s Next for Outlander?
This episode ties up some loose ends while setting up major challenges for the remaining episodes of Season 7. Brianna’s family faces danger with Rob still at large, while Jamie and Claire prepare to return to the battlefield. Ian and Rachel’s wedding offers joy amid the chaos, and Roger’s encounter with his father provides closure and renewed hope.
With three episodes left, the stakes are higher than ever. Outlander Season 7 continues to air on Fridays through the Starz app and at 8 PM ET on Starz.
