As Silo Season 2 progresses, every moment feels like it teeters on the brink of disaster. In Episode 6, aptly titled “Barricades,” the tension intensifies as Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson), the rebellion, and Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) face one step forward and two steps back. Each character is embroiled in escalating stakes that could shape the silo’s future.
The episode begins with a crowd of Down-Deepers gathered near a barricade at level 130. Opposing them are raiders, glaring with hostility. The Down-Deepers chant “let them through,” referring to the routine deliveries Holland has withheld.
This tactic, meant to punish the escape of Shirley (Remmie Milner) and Knox (Shane McRae) last week, also serves as psychological warfare. Watching from his surveillance screens, Holland smugly remarks, “Only nine missed meals separate a functioning society from chaos.” Shirley and Knox soon discover that someone has poisoned their food with rat poison, signaling that Mechanical must quickly adapt to Holland’s strategies.
The Rebels Push Back
The news of rat poison rattles the residents of Mechanical. While Knox and Shirley try to calm fears, many parents grow angry, unwilling to let their children starve to prove a point. Martha (Harriet Walter) steps in to remind everyone that turning on each other is exactly what Holland wants.
She argues that their obedience will only earn them superficial rewards from the Judicial. Her words begin to resonate, but it’s Teddy (Olatunji Ayofe) who brings a breakthrough by delivering fresh food sent by farmers from level 122. Accompanying the food is a note of support, ending with the bold message: “Juliette lives.”
Holland feels confident he can crush the rebellion quickly since he now knows Mechanical has allies smuggling food. However, Shirley, Knox, and Teddy are already planning their next move.
They decide to shift the barricade upward by a few levels. One team drills through the floor while Knox leads another group with improvised weapons to distract the raiders. The strategy works, panicking the raiders and forcing them to retreat.
Sheriff Billings Takes a Stand
Sheriff Paul Billings (Chinaza Uche) plays a critical role, asking his wife Kathleen (Caitlin Zoz) to secretly send a doctor to operate on Patrick Kennedy (Rick Gomez), who needs urgent care. Kathleen manages to smuggle Pete Nichols (Iain Glen) and their baby past the barricade.
Pete successfully removes Kennedy’s bullet, but Kennedy hesitates to fulfill his end of their agreement. Billings presses him, threatening to expose his location to Judge Sims (Common), the new appointee Kennedy didn’t know about. Under pressure, Kennedy reveals details about the footage from the “Before Times” that Juliette shared and admits to a deal he struck with Sims.
Billings faces a moral turning point. Though disillusioned with Judicial, he remains committed to upholding the Pact. After informing Kathleen about his shaken faith, she tests his resolve by having him hold a water glass. When his hand doesn’t tremble despite days without herbs for his Syndrome, she reassures him of his strength.
Mechanical Gains Ground
Holland interrogates Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley), accusing her of aiding Knox and Shirley. Camille defends her actions, citing her adherence to the Pact, but the encounter unsettles her. She leads a team to stop Mechanical’s plans, but they are too late.
Mechanical successfully breach the barricade, gaining control of 10 more levels, including the essential farming complex on 122. This victory prevents Holland from starving them out.
Knox and Shirley celebrate their success with a kiss before Billings interrupts. They vow that Holland and Sims framed them for Judge Meadows’ murder, prompting Billings to launch an investigation. Holland, stunned by this turn of events, expresses frustration with an expletive, realizing he has lost the sheriff’s loyalty.
Personal Struggles Amid the Chaos
Martha reflects on her final moments with Carla (Clare Perkins), refusing to support Knox and Shirley’s claims until Billings provides information about Carla’s whereabouts. Billings suspects Holland locked Carla away, and her health conditions make her survival uncertain.
Juliette, recovering from an infected wound, awakens in a room with Solo (Steve Zahn), who saved her with homemade antibiotics. However, Solo hides her environmental suit, demanding she fix a broken generator pump first. Juliette must comply to regain her suit and continue her mission.
Holland reveals his vulnerable side when he visits Meadows’ body in the morgue. Grieving, he admits he fears the collapse of their 140-year-long peace. Meanwhile, he promotes Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) to his shadow to help decode a hidden message, believing Kyle’s insight will provide crucial answers.
