For almost two decades, Larry David’s Emmy Award-winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm has been causing people to burst out laughing. But even before he was given the adored main part, Larry David was making people laugh.
He is, after all, a co-creator of Seinfeld (1989–1998), which may be the most commercially and critically successful comedy series ever made. It’s no secret that co-creator Jerry Seinfeld is unquestionably the show’s main character, but Jason Alexander’s George Costanza is designed to be a satire of Larry David.
Following the official 1998 finale of the hit sitcom Seinfeld, fans quickly became enamoured with Larry David’s sharp and sardonic style of humour. Luckily, they wouldn’t have to wait long because, in just two years following the conclusion of the show, Larry David would be working with HBO on a brand-new series.
In addition to writing and acting in the comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry David was going to play a heightened version of himself. Furthermore, because HBO was airing the show rather than network television, David and the other members of the creative team were free to make it as obscene and profanity-filled as they liked.
Recap
Larry received some encouraging feedback. He was temporarily imprisoned for breaking the Election Integrity Act, which turned him into a “liberal darling.” We saw how conceited and Trumpian old Larry could be in the final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, when he came up with many simultaneous plans to get out of trouble for leaving his backyard pool unfenced.
It appears that the show’s makers have now set the stage for Larry, should he so choose, to make amends for his years of being such an asshole. If you think about it, it’s kind of like the conclusion of a whole arc, a way to leave things in a different place than they started in the last season.
In a way, it’s pleasant to see him be a jerk, but is it possible to let him change without making the storyline uninteresting? In any case, we begin with him in a holding cell, confusing a fellow named Emmett by telling him about some upscale delicacies he enjoys and offering nutritional advice.
Then he is confronted by a lawyer who sounds and looks just like Mocha Joe, save for a bushy mustache. Jeff hired him without seeing him, but as soon as they cross paths outside the precinct when Larry is released, Jeff notices the similarity right away. This guy is not going to last long, especially if he becomes obsessed for no apparent reason with coffee beans.
