Julia is a show on HBO, Max, starring Sarah Lancashire, and she is amazing as Julia Child. David Hyde Pierce is also known, as well as her husband and a whole bunch of other familiar faces.
It starts with her in Oslo, Norway, in 1961, having completed her book, which was for the American market. A cookbook called Mastering French Cuisine or something along those lines. It was incredibly popular; it took the joy of cooking off the map, and it was the new reigning champion of cookbooks. This was kind of not even a pop as popular of a thing as it is now back then.
This first episode is about her year passes as her husband retires, and they move back to Cambridge, Massachusetts. She is asked to be on a show called “What I’ve Been Reading.” This guy, the Duke, introduces her, and instead of talking about the book, she brings out a hot plate and makes something like a perfect French omelet.
Julia Series Recap
Before diving into Julia Season 2 Episode 7, let’s quickly recap and review the previous episode. Reading about how to cook something is like you’re missing something. There are unspoken things in cooking that are very difficult to describe, like little techniques of whipping and folding. So that element translates really nicely to television.
This is about how she kind of pushes against her husband and against the TV execs. Because this is a time period where you know it’s a revolution. We don’t even get to see it, but she argues her way into getting a pilot episode of her own show where she teaches people to cook.
They don’t really want to do this show, but one of the ways that they make the show is because they get 27 letters asking for more Julia Child on TV.
Then she’s also going through menopause, and the household dynamics are starting to change. We’re transitioning from the post-war 50s thing to the revolution of the 60s, and this is very tastefully made with just little spikes of more risky acting decisions or what they show, and we’re really getting to know the character really well.
I don’t know if this is 100% what she was like, but the performance is definitely more interesting than the movie Julie & Julia. But Meryl Streep is great in it, but it was a little bit cartoonish. However, this show really feels more like a person instead of an icon.
But it was cool that the production was filmed in Cambridge. I think the show is very tastefully made and pleasant with enough spice to it to keep it from being a drag. A lot more happened in previous episodes, but now let’s discuss when Episode 7 of Julia Season 2 will be released and what will happen in it.
