Plot of the movie
The audience is introduced to a couple who are on their way to their hometown but meet an unexpected turn. Their car suddenly breaks down on the road, leaving them in a not-so-friendly location. This incident forces them into an eerie refuge, far from any safety of their thought location.
As the two of them are caught in this mess, tension begins to rise slowly as their relationship goes under a twisted test. Dan starts to get jealous of Trina, his partner. Trina supports the family with her bank manager job.
Their constant arguments and Dan’s toxic behavior towards her during their journey create an unfavorable aura between the two. In a restless attempt, he takes an unexpected route, a risky shortcut, despite the warnings from his partner.
What happens in the end?
Dan is fuelled with rage and insecurities about his partner and relationship. The constant flight between the two has created volatility in Dan’s behavior.
After losing the main route, Dan’s volatility leads to a physical throwdown with a local man. This fight clears the air between the two. While relaxing at the beach, both of them rekindle.
But again, when they’re about to reach their destination, they find out, the route is closed because of a military exercise. The soldiers suggest they follow another route, which will add extra hours to their whole trip.
Dan has been brought up in this area, so he is familiar with the route. He takes a shortcut on the old road. To calm Trina, he agrees to ask for routes from the people; a man tells them they have trespassed on private property and immediately turns back. Dan ignores this completely; their car breaks down with no signal on the phone.
A stranger, Gemo, offers them help, but he has been staring at Trina constantly. With no options left, the two go with them to his house. There, Gemo suggests that they can radio a mechanic, but mostly, he responds to a cryptic message.
Now it is not sure who she is, but by the looks of it, she must be Gemo’s wife. She asked Trina to leave, but it was too late. They were miles away from a proper city and stuck in this village.
Gemo had a deceased daughter, Ariana. She passed away after her when her girlfriend got an abortion because he was not around. Consumed by this, he believes that Dan is responsible for all this.
He plans to take revenge on them by dominating Trina (remember, Gemo was a military man) and forcing her to play as a 16-year-old girl resembling her daughter. As the plot progresses, we see that Gemo is responsible for all the surrounding suffering.
The whole village is eerie, and they all support Gemo and participate in some sort of hidden practice.
Ultimately, Trina is the only capable being who can break the circle. She confronts Gemo with the harsh reality of his daughter’s death so that they can get out of this situation.
The movie is filled with malevolence and dread. The climax reaches the top of the forest at an unknown location. Trina made the right choices, which led her to safety. Are they safe?
