The horror web series starring Naga Chaitanya, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Prachi Desai in the lead roles, Dhootha, aired on 1st December 2023 and has already started receiving a lot of views, becoming a top show on Prime Video. Directed by Vikram K. Kumar, this series has eight episodes in total.
Dhootha, which translates to The Messenger, was aired on Amazon Video earlier this month, and with all the episodes out, people are curious about it. With a clear-cut focus on corruption, betrayal, and selfish motives of humans, Dhootha serves a horror story about how a corrupt journalist is forced to take his own life.
But, since these stories always end up glorifying a hero, his mistakes, and his shortcomings with an unnecessary explanation, did Sagar, our hero of this web series, actually die? The answer is obviously no.
Like all the regular stories, we get a clichéd, overused turn of events in Dhootha as well, where Sagar – whose list of crimes is longer than one would consider “normal” – somehow ends up confessing his crimes and saves not only himself but his loved ones too with a few exceptions, of course.
In this thriller series, we follow a journalist, Sagar, whose life turns horrifying when newspapers predict incidents unfolding in his life. As a suspense thriller with supernatural elements thrown in the mix, Dhootha promises a strong and mystifying journey filled with questions.
Sagar And Samachar: The Newspaper Haunting Poor Journalists
Sagar, who finds these predictions in his newspaper, Samachar, decides to uncover the mystery in order to save his loved ones. He teams up with Kranthi Shenoy, a special investigating officer, to find the culprit behind these strange happenings.
At first, Amrutha tells Sagar that these newspaper clippings might be a coincidence and nothing serious. But when he discovers the real reason behind Charles’s death, he is convinced that whatever is happening, it’s very much real and could get worse. Instead of ignoring it and letting it continue further, he takes it upon himself to stop this nuisance.
Slowly, as more clues emerge, Sagar learns that the culprit only targets the most corrupted journalists. Since he was one of the most selfish people who could sell anyone, even his friends and family, for his personal motives, Sagar knew he had to find a way to save his family without getting killed.
When he does learn that there’s no way to escape, Sagar tries killing himself by overdosing on pills but stops before he can proceed. He suddenly realizes that even if he did kill himself, he wouldn’t succeed at protecting his wife, Priya, or other loved ones. It’s because if Sagar was a corrupt man, his wife was equally corrupt as him, if not more. And although he cheated on her, he couldn’t take his life before saving Priya.
Ghosts And The Laundry List Of Sagar’s Crimes
Following the connections, Sagar finally moves further and is granted his life in exchange for doing one good deed. It’s the ghost forcing these journalists to take their lives who grants Sagar another chance. We witness Sagar confessing to his crimes and killing a man in the process, which is also how he ends up in prison.
Satya Murthy, who is just a ghost, plays a vital role since it’s him and his ghost that stage this whole mystery. Satya, an honest journalist who was murdered by his own peers, was chained to the printing machine, which started it all.
He now uses his misfortune to punish those who play with the public’s feelings and report false news for the sake of money. Instead of focusing on the real and important truth, journalists have lost their way, and Satya intends to correct the wrongs.
Coming to the finale episode, we learn that one of the people who betrayed Satya Murthy happens to be Sagar’s grandfather. After killing a politician, Sagar ends up in jail, where his wife, Priya, visits him with their newborn baby. However, due to the reasons they separated, it seems that they won’t be getting back together anytime soon.
