Selling Sunset is a version of ‘reality’ created by Adam DiVello for Netflix. The show portrays the agents working for the Oppenheim Group, owned by the Oppenheim twin brothers. The real estate firm is in Los Angeles but has offices in Newport Beach and West Hollywood.
Adam DiVello was the first to spot Oppenheim Group’s advertisement in a magazine. He took it to the development executive and arranged an interview. However, they felt different while fitting the twin Oppenheim brothers into the all-female ensemble cast.
The supposed reality show highlights multi-million mansions, like a fantasy, sold by beautiful real-estate agents. However, the show contains interpersonal drama besides business, which makes viewers question whether the drama is fake or genuine.
Is Selling Sunset Staged?
Selling Sunset is unscripted, while a few moments are staged. Christine Quinn addressed the show as ‘5000 fake storylines’ through her tweet on 22 April 2022. According to Chrishell, the show is not scripted, though the cast gets basic points beforehand sometimes.
Still, the cast owns the moment before the camera because it must frame its own sentences. Chrishell has been in feuds with various people. So, she admitted that she would be pissed if it was a scripted show.
Christine Quinn informed in 2020 how her first meeting with her future husband, Christian, in the show was not the first one in real life. Instead, they dated for three months and also purchased a house together. They met through Christine’s girlfriend in real life. However, the show brought Christian as Christine’s client, whom she supposedly met for the first time.
According to the real estate broker, attorney, and cast member of Selling Sunset, Jason Oppenheim, the show is unscripted. However, the showrunners might ask them to include a few things before the camera, which does not make it scripted.
Christine has been the main cast of Selling Sunset for the first five seasons. So, she knows how it works. According to her confession on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, the production team tries some tactics to get natural reactions from the cast members.
For instance, the cast members will be taken into separate rooms and emotionally triggered by being reminded of what other cast members said about them. However, Christine, a professional, does not fall prey.
Mary Fitzgerald and Romain Bonnet married in the season 2 finale released in May 2020. However, filming for the second season began in July 2018 when they were married for two months. They did not reveal their secret marriage because they did not know how long the relationship would last.
The Other Side Of The Coin
The series creator, Adam DiVello, collaborated with Variety and Metro.co.uk to present his point. He calls Selling Sunset a ‘full reality’ show. He spends ample time with the editing team to get proper shots and spends a week on the work, which would require only a day.
Chrissy Teigen is one of the celebrities who did not hesitate to question the show’s authenticity. According to her tweet, she knows about the business in LA, but neither she nor her agents ever met the show’s cast.
Jason cleared her doubts by tweeting that even he does not know the other cast members, which does not mean they are fake. LA is large enough to keep people in the business apart. The next day, Chrissy Teigen tweeted she found Jason’s real estate office and passed by it. So, everything was sorted by the following day.
Only a few of Jason’s employees are portrayed in the show because they cannot fit in the show’s teeny office. Moreover, the real estate agents hardly work from their offices. Otherwise, they are either busy showing houses to their clients or online meetings in their own houses. So, only a handful of employees will be in the office on a workday.
Honestly I don’t even know what agency our agent is with lol. Love the show! Pass your office every day, I’m an open house nut and am very sad I missed burgers and botox!

Apart from that, several viewers caught Jason making a fake call using the camera app in the fifth season. Christine Quinn gave birth in the fourth season, and some viewers accused her of having a false pregnancy. Later, she expressed her disappointment regarding the accusation.
Christine left the Oppenheim Group while filming Season 5, and the production team knew about it. She wanted to include her own storyline in the show, but the team allegedly edited her part to add some spice.
