The contestants on Dancing with the Stars are captivating the audience with their skills as the newest season gets underway. Just two days after a tentative agreement with the Writers Guild of America was struck, ABC aired the season 32 premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” on Tuesday night. The new television season has arrived—autumn.
The first season since Chief Judge Len Goodman’s passing is this one. At the onset of the competition, Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribiero, the hosts, announced that the contestants would now be vying for the “Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy,” which is named after him.
On a night celebrating a century of Disney enchantment, nine surviving celebrities and professional dancers performed songs from the soundtracks of the studio’s most popular motion pictures.
Recap
It was quite a memorable Halloween evening on Dancing with the Stars! DWTS season 10 competitor Niecy Nash Betts was welcomed as a guest judge by co-hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro. Nash Betts said she was thrilled to be a judge again in the ballroom.
Setting the tone for the evening, Alfonso and Julianne explained the format: each celebrity and their partner would perform a solo routine, which would be followed by an exciting dancing monster-thon, or second round. They would compete to outdo their rivals and gain extra points on the scoreboard in this round. When Monster Night started, the anticipation was obvious!
Famous for her part in the Marvel universe, Xochitl Gomez was ecstatic following her triumph the week before, which brought her the first perfect score of 10. She remembered being giddy with delight and “jumping for joy.”
Xochitl admitted that, given her predisposition to become easily terrified, Monster Night, the Halloween-themed show, was a little outside of her comfort zone as she got ready for it. Xochitl took solace in her acting abilities as she practiced her contemporary dance routine to Ruelle’s “Game of Survival.” She could still feel the pressure of the high standards they had established with their last fantastic performance.
A surprising turn of events happened during their performance when Xochitl appeared to have an ankle injury halfway through the dance. When they were done, her professional partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, had to take her down the stairs to get the judges’ feedback.
Even with the difficulties, Xochitl received great marks from the judges. Bruno gave her props for “creating a monster” with her dance, and Carrie Ann called Xochitl’s narration “powerful” and likened her to an aerialist.
Ariana Madix paused to consider her performance from the previous week when she scored a nine. The Vanderpump star admitted that she needed to keep getting better because she couldn’t afford to slip.
Everyone in the audience was genuinely amazed by Ariana’s rendition of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” set to a string arrangement during their Argentine tango. Niecy admitted that she was enamored with it and called it “beautiful.”
Bruno praised the sincerity and purity of her Argentine Tango, calling it “thrilling” and “terrific.” Carrie Ann agreed, saying that Ariana had what it took to succeed and that she possessed something very amazing. Derek concluded the compliments by calling it “beautiful” and praising her perfect performance.
