Daler Mehndi Human Trafficking Case
Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh (who died in October 2017) were arrested on IPC charges for human trafficking in which both brothers defrauded people of huge sums of money and committed immigration fraud (also known as Kabootarbaazi)—arrested by the department.
Dating back to 2003, a total of 31 cases were registered against Mehndi and his brothers. According to the complaint, singer Mehndi and his brother are accused of defrauding young people of up to Rs 2 million each and illegally abducting them from Punjab state by posing as music group members.
Bakshish Singh’s complaint was followed by 35 others, including Daler Mehndi, who was convicted in a Patiala court in 2018 in a 2003 human trafficking case and sentenced to two years in prison.
The defendants allegedly brought two performance groups to the United States in 1998 and 1999 and illegally left 10 members in the United States. However, singer Mehndi was later released on bail.
