If we talk about the ‘Matrix’ movie, which is a sci-fi film released in 1999, helmed by Wachowksis (Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski). It starred Keanu, who played ‘Neo,’ the main protagonist, along with Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano in crucial roles.
The movie is about a dystopian future based on which are taking over the world and enslaving humanity. Most of the population unknowingly got trapped in a simulated reality called “The Matrix.” It features an illusion of the late 20th century, while their bodies were kept unconscious and used as a source of energy from the machines.

Sandra Bullock said that the actor Carrie-Anne Moss did a splendid job in the role of Trinity. She thought she might have said yes to the role and not be selectively limited to doing movies as the actor did then. At that time, Reeves was not even the second choice for the character Neo in the movie.
The producer has revealed that Brad Pitt was their first choice, even though the actor agreed to this in the initial period. Later, he said no as he was tired of filming Seven Years in Tibet.
The producer also said that the script was first given to Sandra, and filmmakers were hoping that she would accept. She was offered the roles of both Trinity, but later, the role was roped by Carrie-Anne Moss and Neo, whose gender would have been swapped had she been interested in the role.
Although the actor showed the least interest in the script or concept then, and later they went for their leads only to land on Keanu Reeves. The filmmaker said, “We(the filmmaker) were getting desperate. We went to Sandy (Sandra) Bullock and said We will change Neo(character of the movie) to a girl.”
The movie script was also in the hands of Leonardo DiCaprio, but he clearly declined it. They were not interested in one more movie which would require visual effects right after ‘Titanic.’
Then they approach Will Smith. He was close to getting cast as the character but had to drop out. Fortunately, it goes on hand to Keanu Reeves and chosen to play the character ‘Neo,’ and the rest is history!
In 1999, ‘The Matrix’ turned out to be a major commercial hit, applauded by critics, and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. It also created a major impact on the sci-fi genre. Matrix’s visuals with the compelling storyline, and mainly Reeves’s portrayal as Neo, was the main reason for the box-office success.
The movie earned $465 million in worldwide box office. Later the franchise released two other sequels in 2003, The Matrix Reloaded” (2003) and “The Matrix Revolutions” (2003), which created the absolute Matrix Universe.
Overall, if the ‘speed’ actor had accepted the franchise’s offer at first to play Neo, then we might have missed Keanu’s splendid acting skill in the movie. Although, it brought popularity and fame to the actor Keanu Reeves.
