Imagine not only knowing how to perform magic skillfully but also being a part of an organization that has others just like you. Such was the life of television host, comedian, and magician Stephen Mulhern, the guy from Britain’s Got More Talent, Big Star’s Little Star, Catchphrase, and many more.
When he was eleven years old, his father introduced him to the gateway to magic; the man had not stopped since. Since then, he has created his magic show Stephen’s Mega Mad Magic Show, and won many awards for his intriguing performances.
People also saw him on television through the Disney Channel, The Quick Trick Show, and his constant, Tricky TV show, where he has even invited celebrities to be a part of his magic tricks. He is popular for beheading people or outright cutting them in half, especially celebrities like Holly Willoughby, Katherine Jenkins, and Rachel Stevens,
Stephen Mulhern might as well be a household name at this point, considering he pedstepped foot in the entertainment industry in 1997 and has not left since.
The Magic Circle
For those who do not know, the Magic Circle is an elite and secretive magical society founded in 1905. Famous names like What Happened To The Punk Bar On Bar Rescue? Revealed and Prince of Wales are linked to the organization extending its legitimate status even to the Royal Family. It is a serious affair for the members already a part of the Circle though it has its gates open for people serious enough to take an entrance exam.
Formed to keep the art of magic alive, the organization likes to maintain secrecy regarding the actual know-how of its performances. The members are expected to take inspiration from the Magic Circle’s Latin “indocile private loqui” motto, which translates in English to “not apt to disclose secrets.”
As intimidating as the organization sounds, it is not as strict as it may look to some; outsiders, muggles if you will, are allowed to attend magic shows in the theatre and are also offered tours of the place.
Mulhern and His Controversy With The Magic Circle
Stephen Mulhern has way too many show appearances and awards at forty-six to keep count. But even among the long list of accomplishments, there is one that makes him stand out in the world of magic immediately.
When he was seventeen years old, young Mulhern managed to impress the panel of judges so much that they found themselves with no choice but to take him in. He joined the Magic Circle officially at eighteen when he came of age and was no longer a minor. But this achievement is even more important because he got to be the youngest-ever addition to the organization.
A world of opportunities must have opened for the young boy, and while he was an official member of the Magic Circle, he continued to pursue his television appearances. At twenty-one, Mulhern hosted a children’s show called Finger Tips, which had people presenting children-friendly activities.
In one episode, Mulhern, still a part of the Magic Circle, presented a simple but tricky magic trick, but he did not stop at that and showed the audience how the magic trick was performed. It was an innocent move on his part, but the Circle obviously, disagreed and saw this as the ultimate betrayal of their motto.
Stephen explained in an interview that he got into magic because his father showed him how to do the tricks, and that was eye-opening for him, and he wanted to do the same for little kids. He wished to show them the behind-the-scenes tricks because, for him, it would be the push for the next generation of talented magicians.
The Magic Circle suspended his membership, and Mulhern found himself on the verge of being thrown out. Though he confessed that he was taken back into the organization, his membership was reinstated. He recalled that he was suspended not once but twice when the show Finger Tips began re-telecasting the show’s episodes, which included the episode where he performed the magic trick.
Stephen Mulhern is no longer seen performing insane magic tricks on television that much and has curbed his attempts at revealing the secrets behind his magic tricks. The famous host recently revealed that he would be absent from screens for health reasons.
