The relationship between a father and a son is often complicated, to say the least, especially when they belong to two different generations. A son is often closer to his grandfather than his father, and this was showcased beautifully through a film released on November 1, 2008, titled Generation Gap.
Directed by Bill Norton, the film became an instant fan favorite with its unique storyline and emotional aspect of a relationship between a grandfather and his grandson. Produced by Kevin Bocarde, Kyle A. Clark, and Larry Levinson, the drama film features Edward Asner playing the role of Bart Cahil, Dylan’s grandfather.
Rue McClanahan plays the role of Kay, Alex Black plays the role of Dylan Statlan, Danielle Savre plays the role of Jenny, Catherine Mary Stewart plays the role of Veronica Statlan, Jack Conley plays the role of Jhonny, Ralph Waite plays the role of Chick, Hal Williams playing the role of Mac, Charlie McDermott playing the role of Corey Williams, and Marcello Palmieri playing the role of Tim in the lead cast.
The supporting cast of Generation Gap features Christopher Murray playing the role of Sheriff Brown, Caara Shayne playing the role of a nurse, Zach Bradshaw playing the role of Deputy Lewis, and Matt Sigloch playing the role of a military officer.
Jimmy Bridges played the role of Pallbearer, David Cohen played the role of a partygoer, Tony Devon played the role of Warren, Paul Edney played the role of another partygoer, and John Heard played the role of principal Winters.
Generation Gap focuses on Dylan’s mother struggling to stop his misbehaviors, and after one such fight, she decides to send Dylan to his grandfather’s house. Dylan’s grandpa then spends time with him to help him in becoming a better son and human through different age-appropriate chores.

Generation Gap Premise
The movie focuses on a troubled teen living with his mother who fails to control his behavioral issues and, after one of his recent fights with his classmate, decides to send him to his grandfather’s in the suburbs.
The movie begins with Dylan’s mother being called into the principal’s office and being informed about Dylan being suspended from school for his unlimited fights with his peers. Meanwhile, Dylan’s grandfather visits a local restaurant where the waitress playfully teases him for his choice of having his regular.
After Dyan and his mother return from Dylan’s school, they get into a confrontation with each other having a massive blowout, and it gets revealed Dylan became a troubled teen after his father abandoned him and his mother. In a fit of rage, Dylan accuses his mother of being the reason behind his father abandoning them.
Dylan’s grandpa is playing cards with his friends when his daughter Veronica calls him to ask him to take Dylan in for the summer. Veronica pleads with his father about Dylan needing tough love as he is on the verge of not graduating from college. Veronica’s dad agrees to take Dylan in.
Meanwhile, Dylan returns home and gets in a fight with his mother after she informs him about him spending his summer with his grandfather in the suburbs. The next day Dylan arrives in the suburbs, and his grandfather comes to pick him up. The duo reminisces the memories of the time they spent together on their way to a cafe.
Dylan is introduced to his grandparent’s friends and is offered to play poker with them. Once Dylan arrives at his grandpa’s house, he is given a set of three rules he needs to follow, and as long as he does so, he will be out of trouble. The next day Dylan’s grandpa wakes him up early in the morning and knowingly breaks his cell phone by throwing it on the road.
Dylan’s grandfather teaches him to respect their national flag along with taking care of house chores, including taking the trash out at night.
He calls his mother to complain about the way his grandpa is treating him, begging to return home, but Veronica refuses to do so. Dylan’s grandpa gives him some important life lessons from time to time. Dylan meets Jenny through his grandfather and is immediately infatuated with her.
Dylan’s grandfather instructs Dylan to clean out a garden and fix its fence for a Fourth of July party. Jenny comes to help Dylan and offers him some snacks while the two talk about their lives. Dylan helps a teenager in escaping from bullies but gets caught by the Sheriff of the suburbs.
Dylan starts playing poker with his grandfather and his grandfather’s friends at the diner. After several moments of tough love, Dylan’s grandfather tells him he is proud of the man he is turning into. After spending a day with Jenny and returning home, Dylan sees his grandfather is unresponsive and rushes him to the hospital.
The movie ends with Dylan’s grandpa passing away in a hospital, surrounded by the people who loved him. Dylan’s grandpa gifted him his old Chevy before passing away, and he drives away from the cemetery with Jenny.
Generation Gap Filming Locations
1. California, U.S.A.
California is a captivating state in the western region of the United States used by the production crew of Generation Gap to film the entire movie. Some of the prime locations used to film the movie consists of Cachuma Lake, Los Olivos, and Simi Valley.
The scene with Dylan and his grandfather touring in the suburbs is filmed in Simi Valley. The crew chose the location of the abundance of greenery, which gave the perfect look for the suburbs.
