Gangs Of New York Ending Explained:
The film begins in the year 1846 with the introduction of Priest William, the leader of Dead Rabbit, as he teaches a young Amsterdam the principles of thier gang that Vallon is set to inherit in the future. In the slum of Five Points, the two gangs function and are against each other’s principles. Bill, the leader of the Protestant Confederation of American Natives, engages in a final battle with Priest Vallon to see which one of the two gangs will hold sway over the territory of Five Points.
This tussle ends with the death of Amsterdam Vallon and Bill emerging as the new leader of the Five Slum territory. The murder of Vallon is witnessed by his son Amsterdam, who was in hiding as instructed by his father; he comes out and hides the knife responsible for killing his dad. After the death of Priest Vallon, his son Amsterdam is taken to live on the Blackwell’s island.
Amsterdam returns to Five Points in 1862 to avenge his father’s death as he retrieves the knife he hid years ago after Priest Vallon’s death. Amsterdam meets with Johnny, an old acquaintance who helps him in getting familiarized with local gangs who pay respect to William. Following his meeting with the local clan Amsterdam is introduced to the killer of his father, the only leader of Five Points, William, or the great William, the butcher.
Amsterdam, with the intention of getting recruited into William’s gang, keeps his real identity hidden. With his hidden identity as a shield, Amsterdam begins investigating and realizes that the former allies of his dad have now turned against him and paid their respect to Bill. Bill celebrates his win over Dead Rabbits every year, and this is where Amsterdam plans to end his life in front of everyone.
As the film goes on, Jenny’s entry takes place, and she is a grifter to whom both John and Amsterdam are attracted to. Amsterdam becomes Bill’s protege after gaining his trust as he saves him from an assassination attempt. Jonny, in a jealous fit over Jenny’s affection towards Amsterdam, reveals Amsterdam’s identity to Bill during the anniversary celebration of his win on the Dead Rabbits, who, in turn, gets him beaten.
Bill also burns a side of Amsterdam’s cheek to remind him of his power over the territory. Amsterdam goes into hiding, and Jenny comes to his rescue, but he returns to Five Points to take revenge on Bill. Amsterdam hangs a dead rabbit on a tree to tell Bill that he has returned to avenge the death of his dad. Bill sends Mulraney to kill Amsterdam, but Amsterdam prepares for an attack, kills the corrupt officials, and hangs his corpse by the same tree.
Bill orders John to be beaten and run through a pike, thus ending him. Bill meets with Amsterdam and the gang of dead rabbits to challenge them that he will return stronger than before and end him. Amsterdam plots to end Bill’s influence in Five Points by making Tweed back Monk McGinn’s candidacy for the new sheriff of Five Points. Well, as it turns out, McGinn wins the candidacy, but Bill, in a fit of rage at losing, murders him.
Did Amsterdam Avenge The Death Of His Father?
As the gangs of Dead Rabbit and Bill The Butcher prepare for the end battle, the Civil War draft riots break out, and the soldiers of the Union Army get deployed to control the rioters. The battle between the two gangs is interrupted by a cannon fire shot from a ship. The naval fire ends up killing several gang members from both sides. The moment of truth and the end of the battle approaches as Bill and Amsterdam come face to face.
As both of them fight, Bill gets injured by a shrapnel piece, and Amsterdam takes advantage of this situation and kills Bill using the knife that killed his father. The film ends with Amsterdam burying the bone alongside his father in the cemetery. Jenny and Amsterdam leave as the color of the sky changes, and a new New York gets developed over the years.
