Yamori Ko from the Call of the Night anime has proved to be a new Chunibyo in the world of the anime universe. What is special about Yamori Ko being a Chunibyo is that there are not many protagonists of the series that are proven to be Chunibyo. We can argue that there are certain main characters that tend to be overdramatic and dress oddly (I am thinking of Joylne Joestar, who is in prison because of her oddities and plot) Yamori Ko has taken his delusions to the next step. The fact that he is 14 years old and in the second year of his junior high (to be specific, he is in the 8th grade) makes him the perfect Chunibyo to exist.
Well, if you are wondering what the hell is a Chunibyo and why Yamori Ko is one of them? Don’t worry, cause we have filled this article with a lot of information regarding the said title. Follow along with this article as we break down this theory and talk about the newest anime featuring a teen who is bored out of his mind and thinks he is special. Call of the Night is a comedy Japanese manga series that is written and illustrated by Kotoyama. The series first started serializing in Shogakukan’s weekly shonen Sunday in August 2019, and as of writing this, there are a total of 11 volumes of the series and still counting.
The anime adaptation of the series was announced in November 2021, with an official site dedicated to the series produced by Liden Films studio. The first episode of the anime premiered on the 8th of July, and as of writing this, 7 episodes of the anime are already released, which is more than half of what is planned for season 1.
The plot consists of Yamori Ko in his adolescence, who is an insomniac and wanders the street of Japan at night, finding something exceptional to live his. He stumbles on a vampire named Nazuna, who, in exchange for drinking his blood, becomes his friend in the night. Nazuna has implied that if he falls in love with her that he can become a vampire making Yamori do everything to fall in love with her and say goodbye to his old boring human life.
What is a Chunibyo?
A chunibyo is a concept that all human beings go through at least once in their life. Whether you believe it or not, you may have gone through it as well at some point in your teenager. Even though you may not have this tantrum at the age of 14 but at a single point, you may have felt rebellious against the world and its ideology, thinking that you are superior. Well, that is a chunk of a Chunibyo is in real life.
However, in anime or any fiction story, it goes a level higher where a character is possessed with supernatural abilities making them exceptional from the rest of the world. They would often dress exceptionally and make themselves stand out when are in the age of 14 years old. Recent examples of a Chunibyo from the anime are Omoharu Nakanaka from Komi Can’t Communicate (who dresses oddly) and Tokoyami Fumikage from My Hero Academia, who is pure gothic and represent a particular style.
