It became clear to him pretty easily why it was suggested that the skills of the non-belonging group shouldn’t be used. Of course, there was a way to bypass that, but he didn’t have the luxury of time to learn it at the moment. Plus, he was fuming over bruised Codellia in his arms, even though he was starting to spew blood from his mouth.
The witch was warning him to stop, or he will have to face the major consequence. The cost of using those spells was a direct hit on the HP of the person, meaning his very life was being threatened. However, Cordelia woke up from the burst of energy releasing and decided to use magic to aid him.

The witch had imparted them with important information, and the way she treated them also had an impact on the ending.
