The Son Ending Explained
Peter Miller is the father of Nicholas Miller, and he welcomes the same in his house along with his wife, Beth, and her newborn child. Earlier, Nicholas lived with Kate Miller, who is her mother, and she only asked Peter to take him with them because his behavior had changed and had been full of aggression.
Nicholas was a studious child, but now he is showing no interest in school and not even socializing because he is going on through a major depression. Peter finds him in unfamiliar territory, and he tries to work hard with his son to make him a disciplined child and change his behavior.
In addition, Beth loses faith in Nicholas, limits his time alone with his young brother, and occasionally suspects him of stealing her jewelry. Naturally, Nicholas is not getting the assistance he requires. He and his father fought with each other because Nicholas had been skipping school, and also he tried to commit suicide.
He has been transferred to a patient facility, and when his parents came to visit him, he backed him to get him out and convinced them that he had recovered. Both his parents were advised by the facility that they should not take Nicholas out now, but they didn’t hear them and moved Nicholas out of the facility.
We saw Nicholas and his parents spending some time together with each other, and that was a very emotional moment and also rare in their life. When they get to Peter’s house from the institution, Nicholas is bustling around preparing tea for them. With Kate consenting to let Nicholas return to her home and Peter opting to decline his promotion and have Nicholas join him at work as an intern, the parents intend to watch continuously after the youngster.
We also see that Nicholas gave tea to his parents and sat with them on the couch and the plan to watch a movie and the same time, Nicholas said sorry to them, and in return, they said I love you. Then he went from there to take a shower, but instead of going to the washroom, he went to the laundry room where he takes used to keep a gun that was already seen in the movie and that was given as a gift from his father, and Nicolas uses that gun and kills himself by shooting himself.
But the seeing got a little bit confusing because when Nicolas died, there was a flashback in the movie saying that Peter was trying to teach Nicholas how to swim. Peter sees his son alive in a dream scene that follows.
Peter thinks of Nicholas as the unreliable narrator of a book called Death Can Wait. They are standing across from one other, and he tells Nicholas, “I’m proud of you,” while looking him in the eyes. Peter is then shown standing by himself in a room while the camera pans.
When his wife walks in, she queries him, “What’s wrong? Were you considering Nicholas? Beth reassures Peter as he apologizes, saying, “You did the best you could at the time.” He sobs uncontrollably while his wife comforts him by saying, “Life goes on.”
