What is the actual Cardiff Concert Controversy?
Recently, Tom Jones has shown his disapproval of the “Delilah” ban from being sung at rugby matches. Yes, the singer expressed his disapproval of forbidding his song. Earlier this year, during the month of February, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) stated that 1968 would no longer be played by choirs at the Principality Stadium.
This decision was actually taken because of the song’s fact. It features a lyric about a woman’s murder by her partner after she was caught in an affair. The song was written by Barry Mason. According to the sources, Principality Stadium announced that “Delilah will not be featuring on the playlist for choirs for rugby internationals” at their stadium.
They further stated that “The WRU removed the song from its half-time and music play entertainment list during international matches in 2015. Guest choirs have also requested recently not to feature the song at their pre-match performance and throughout the games.”
They also said that “The Rugby Union condemns domestic violence of any Kind. We have sought advice before from subject matter juries on the issuing of censoring the music, and we are respectfully aware that it (Delilah) is problematic and upsetting to some supporters due to its subject matter.”
Meanwhile, during a gig at Cardiff Castle, which happened on Saturday. Although, the singer performed the song and answered to the crowd along with the media that “You can’t stop us singing the song ‘Delilah’. Can you (pointing to the crowd) imagine? Who was the man who didn’t want us to sing.”
He also added, “They (WRU) may stop the choir from singing, but they haven’t stopped the crowd. Keep on singing it, and I’ll keep singing it too.” Even before, in 2014, the 83-year-old singer defended his song amid calls to ban it from singing in rugby matches.
Jones has said that he “loves to hear it sung at the rugby games.” and it makes him proud to be Welsh. He also thinks, “if they were looking into music lyrics about a man murdering a woman, it’s not a political statement. That’s just something that happened in the life of that woman being unfaithful to him, and the man just loses it.”
Overall, there will no longer be performed to the song by choirs in Cardiff. It has created mixed reactions from the audience as well. Jones’s hit song has been controversial, and it was removed from the playlist in 2015 because the song points out S*xism and misogyny.
Hence, the Union started this week to ban the performance of the song. After hours of the news, the Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi performed it on his show in Cardiff. But some of the audiences felt that it was such a relief not to listen to a stadium singing and highlighting the domestic violence. Not want the song to showcase their culture. Also, some of them felt the decision was a ‘disgrace,’ and the song was ‘the best song.’
