Who was Audrey Hepburn’s partner?
Dutch-born businessman Robert Wolders. Wolders recalls feeling that they were “meant to be” very early in their courtship. Wolders and Hepburn were together from 1980 until she died in 1993. When asked why he never proposed, Wolders says that they never felt the need.
Robert explained how she felt like she already had two unhappy marriages, it was wonderful the way it was, and he recalled how the actress once said in an interview that it is more romantic this way because it is not another piece of paper but is out of loyalty to each other that bonded them together. Wonders explained that it might have been different if they had been younger and wanted to have children, but that is not the case here.
The businessman stated how they were ready for each other while saying that they had both made their mistakes when they met and that these mistakes were valuable to them later in life when they were both more mature.
How Did Audrey Hepburn Spend Her Final Days?
Sadly, medical authorities gave her three months to live after being diagnosed with the health scare. Her longtime partner, Wolders, revealed how Hepburn acknowledged being afraid of the pain but not of dying. Wolders further revealed how Hepburn wanted to spend her last Christmas at their home in Switzerland. However, given her deteriorating health, getting to her hometown proved difficult until two generous friends stepped in to help the actress.
Robert recalled how Hepburn was rather desperate to get back to Switzerland. While she would have probably succumbed during the flight from L.A., they went by private jet made possible by designer and close friend Hubert de Givenchy and her friend Bunny Mellon. The pilots also descended carefully to slowly reduce the pressure, as the actress was on life support.
Hepburn’s good friend Michael Tilson Thomas remembered the late star and how her unique grace remained undimmed at the end of her life. Thomas recalled how Hepburn could make everyone who met her feel and was in her presence feel like she was seeing them. She recognized what was special about them as she was full of loving and appreciative words.
