“The Big Steal” is a classic Australian movie that came out in the year 1990. This is a teen comedy movie that went on to win the hearts of the people of Australia and won various awards too! Joining the clan of movies such as The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, The Big Steal is a blue teen movie depicting the coming of age teenagers and a crazy adventure from their life.
The movie is seen to revolve around a bunch of teenagers, a girl next door, her strict father, and a villain who is making a fool of them all. When Danny Clark, the shy teenager, gets Joanna Johnson to go out on a date with him, he is at the top of the world. But wait for a second; there is a problem in his way! He has promised to take her on the date in a JAGUAR.
He doesn’t own; what he owns, though, is a family car, an old Nissan Cedric that his father gifted him as a birthday gift. He cannot take his date on a ride in that though, so he decided to sell it off. Things seem just fine until the engine of his Jaguar stops working. He realizes a little late that he was conned, and now he is out for revenge on the villain in the movie Gordon Farkas. He has a plan set up right, but things aren’t that easy.
This amazingly relatable and funny movie has an amazing cast with actors such as Claudia Karvan, Ben Mendelsohn, Damon Herriman, and Steve Bisley in the movie. The movie is directed by Nadia Tass and produced by Nadia Tass and David Parker. Ben Mendelsohn went on to work in various amazing films such as The Animal Kingdom, but people find themselves coming back to this movie hit that made them like the actor first!
There are certainly rough edges to the movie and the plan that Danny has made along with his friends Van and Mark, but they are blunted by the fun and thrill of it all! There is a certain sense of Aussie humor that gets to people and keeps them engaged and their eyes glued to the screen.
Be it Danny’s parents and the way they are handling the complete situation, Joanna’s father, who is the classic overprotective father trying to save his daughter from the claws of the world, or the sleazy villain in the movie. All of them make a unique bunch of characters who capture the heart of the audience in no time.
