An American reality series that documents its participants putting their lives in danger for work is what this long-running reality show is about. Deadliest Catch is a reality series that released its first season on April 12th, 2005, on the Discovery Channel and continues to air presently. The show takes viewers and fishermen to the middle of the Bering Sea during the Alaskan King crab and Snow crab fishing season.
But the show is much more than just showing the tough life of the fisherman aboard and also hopes to touch on matters of importance to them. These include the rationalization process, which forces the fishermen and the crew to choose between either meeting the quotas or keeping the extra crew with them.
It also depicts the hard life of a fisherman, which forces them to be harsh towards their crew members, at times showing little to no tolerance towards incompetence or rookie-like behavior. Throughout the nineteen seasons of the show, we have seen many instances of captains of the ships downright berating their crew’s lack of capabilities to be ashore. A lot of the time, it gets extended to huge fights and a large amount of verbal abuse.
The show is much like a documentary with very real sea adventure and an insight into the lives of those who probably indulge in one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It is also how the reality show got its name, for portraying the high risk of death that the occupation brings along with the delicious catch.
What is Deadliest Catch about?
Shot at the Bering Sea, we follow the life of the fishermen aboard their ships during the October king crab season and the January opilio crab season. With winds hard enough to blow a grown man away and even stronger waves coming hitting the deck of the ships, we get to see how these fishermen struggle to get hundreds of crabs into their traps and onto the deck.
Though life out there is tough, and the captains of the fleet curse and bully the new members enough to make them want to quit, it also seems like a requirement to see if one can survive life at sea. And there is not always a thick layer of tension aboard their ships because the episodes have also shown the great camaraderie and brotherhood that the crew shares among themselves and their captain.
It is acknowledged that this is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, which is why rescue helicopters remain ready near the fishing area to fly out to rescue anybody who could be in danger. The show has Mike Rowe as the narrator, but he remains behind the scenes. The commentary is helpful for viewers as it helps us connect the storylines and understand the technical aspects of things.
The ugly fights and the immense use of profanities on the show have caused the makers to blur or censor whatever may be inappropriate according to different countries.
What happened to Todd Kochutin?
Son to Robert Olsen and Deanna Kochutin, Todd was a fisherman who appeared on Deadliest Catch for two seasons. The tragic news of his passing was made public almost a year after the thirty-year-old died, making it even sadder.
Fans of the show had known Todd to be a guy with a great sense of humor and a personality liked by all. We knew of him as someone who loved the fishing occupation, as can be seen clearly on his Facebook, which has pictures of him holding a fish almost every time, but he also liked to play video games and listen to music just like an average guy of his age.
It was revealed that Todd died at thirty on February 26th, 2021, with his funeral on March 22nd, 2021. His passing was made public in April 2022. It was told to the media that he died due to “injuries sustained while on board F/V Patricia Lee.” What makes his death even sadder is that his parents and his sister had all passed before him, leaving him to be the sole living member of his immediate family.
But the exact details of his death are still being kept secret, and all fans know is that Todd was injured heavily, which eventually caused him to succumb to them. Though some light digging in one of the series clips tells us that the crew realized that Todd had injured himself and needed immediate medical attention.
Captain Bill Wichrowski was informed of the news of Todd’s injury and called for the medics. Captain Sig Hansen said that Todd might have been hit by a crab pot, a sort of cage to hold the crabs weighing around eight hundred pounds on the ship, Patricia Lee. While recalling the devastating incident, Sig called it a “scary, scary thought.”
The medic reached the ship and quickly got to helping Todd, revealing that Todd seemed to be in a lot of pain and then sometime later radioing that Todd had died. Todd’s absence on the ship was heavily felt by the crew, with one even confessing that it is getting difficult to get on with their lives and that “he cannot keep losing his friends” to the sea.
With no immediate family and no mention of any wife or children, Todd’s death feels very lonely, making fans very emotional. The show has had many deaths before but for reasons unrelated to the sea, like drug overuse or gang fights. But Todd was completely innocent, and his passing feels extremely unfair as the man only ever expressed his love for the sea and fishing.
Fans of the show observed that when Captain Bill was first informed of the injury, his immediate response was, “I hope it is not Todd.” The show released clips of Todd getting on board the ship and joining the crew, and he had such enthusiasm and the grace of someone who knew exactly what he was supposed to do. He lacked a rookie’s incompetence and confusion, which was probably why he was liked by his crew mates and acknowledged by his captain.
One of the crew members, Landon, told the news to Bill, the captain of their ship, who felt so shaken he needed to go off-camera to take in the situation and come back not as someone who lost a crewmate but as the ship’s captain.
Even so, Todd’s death left everyone disturbed, they still got to go home, and their lives continued to go on just like normal, with the loss of loved ones piling on the other. The continues to air on Discovery Channel and is currently airing its nineteenth season, with new episodes coming out weekly on Tuesdays at 8:00 pm.
