Things have been getting a bit grim for the Nonnatus House in the last few episodes of Call The Midwife. With sister Monica’s declining health and other numerous growing tensions within Poplar, the nurses have been having harder times than usual but now that Beatrix’s wedding will be happening soon, the season might just have a happy ending.
First seen on 15 January 2012, Call The Midwife is a medical series that’s set in the 20th century and used to be based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. The show now mostly follows a plot developed by the creator, Heidi Thomas, and executive producer, Pippa Harris. The story is mostly made with factual evidence of what was going on through those years.
This series has managed to shed light on incidences that aren’t seen as much in other medical shows, these include Poverty and its consequences on childbirth, birth defects, genital mutilation, and many more. It has also featured popular historical occurrences such as the Thalidomide tragedy, Tuberculosis outbreaks, Cleft Palates, and most recently, the Hepatitis epidemic.
The latest episode mostly revolved around the outbreak of the liver disease within Poplar, and how it ends up affecting everyone, including our very own nurse Monica. The cast of Call the Midwife now features the actors’ Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne), Judy Parfitt (Sister Monica Joan), Helen George (Nurse Beatrix), Stephen McGann (Dr. Patrick Turner), and Megan Cusack (Nurse Nancy).
Call The Midwife Season 12 Episode 7: Recap
We see the Nonnatus house being invited to Beatrix’s wedding. Dr. Patrick Turner informs about the widespread cases of hepatitis arising in Poplar. Nurse Nancy arrives at Amanda Conner’s home to check up on her baby, and advises her to move to a better location rather than a caravan. Meanwhile, the nurses organize a competition sponsored by the powdered milk companies.
Lucille’s husband returns from West Indies and starts to live in Poplar separately from his wife. He gets a job at a facility that feeds homeless people and finds that the job is harder than it looks. A young man, seemingly a drug addict, tries to come into the facility but since it was already full, he has to send him away. Another woman named Rosemary gives birth to a child but shows symptoms of hepatitis. She is separated from the baby while the nurses try to figure out the source of the spread.
We later see that Leon, the drug addict, was lying unwell on the street and Lucille’s husband takes him to the hospital. He runs away and meets up with his mother, Rosemary, the same woman who had contracted Hepatitis, possibly from Leon.
Amalda’s family is made homeless after their caravan is taken away. They try to ask for help but are sent away. After finding an abandoned home, they start living in the desolate building and are almost caught by the police. Amanda ends up giving birth in the house but the bleeding doesn’t stop, prompting her husband to call nurse Nancy for help. She soon arrives and helps take her to the hospital.
Mrs. Conner soon reaches normal temperatures, but since her family was now homeless, their older child is given away to a foster family for some time. The husband would have to live in a hostel far away, and Amalda will be staying at the hospital.
When the day of the competition arrives, Nurse Monica becomes unwell. She is diagnosed with Hepatitis and due to her age, the disease affects her much worse. She is advised to rest while the rest of the Nonnatus house is worried for her wellbeing.
