Burry’s actions attract the attention of other investors who go on to follow his lead, including Mark Baum (Carell). Baum’s firm, Front Point Partners, joins with several other firms to bet against the mortgage market. They make a profit of $1 billion. The film also focuses on the personal lives of Baum and his team as they deal with the crisis. Baum is estranged from his wife and has an uneasy relationship with his adopted daughter. He suffers from anxiety attacks and is struggling to make ends meet.
