Week 3 Recap: Richie Anderson and Giovanni Pernice
We saw it could Richie and Giovanni maintain the momentum with their Samba performance of “Hakuna Matata” from “The Lion King,” which he and Giovanni stunned the audience with last week. Giovanni sang in their VT, and they went back to Richie’s elementary school to meet some of the kids and perform some of their routines.
The dance: Richie and Giovanni, who were dressed as Timon and Pumbaa, began their performance by dancing in front of the judges before coming out onto the dance floor. Richie had plenty of hip movement and superb footwork, but Len Goodman once said that there was a little too much “messing around.” Although I would have preferred a bit more of that Samba jump and his arms did occasionally wander, he has improved at directing Giovanni and the boundless enthusiasm is unquestionably still present. Although not the most technically flawless routine, it was a pleasant way to start the show, and he should still be performing for a few more weeks.
Shirley applauded Richie’s stationary Samba runs, stroll, and pivots as well as his “beautiful” bounce, claiming it to be “one of his finest numbers so far.” Anton praised it as “simply great” and expressed appreciation for Richie’s improved energy management. Craig praised the characterization but felt that it required more bounce and flow. Motsi found it amusing and enjoyable. They got 27 out of 40
