Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender may be officially set to conclude with Season 3, but the creative team behind the live-action adaptation is already thinking well beyond that ending. While the streaming giant has not announced any plans for a fourth season, executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani recently revealed that they have already discussed potential directions for a continuation if Netflix decides to expand the series.

The comments come as anticipation continues to build for Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, which has received a stronger early critical reception than the first season and has quickly climbed Netflix’s streaming charts. Although Season 3 is currently intended to complete Aang’s journey from the original animated series, the show’s creators believe the Avatar universe still has plenty of stories left to explore.

Showrunners reveal Season 4 ideas are already in development

Speaking to ScreenRant ahead of the release of Season 2, executive producer and writer Christine Boylan explained that while the decision to continue the series ultimately belongs to Netflix, the writers naturally continue imagining where the story could go.

“We never get to make those decisions,”

Boylan said.

“I’m always thinking a little bit outside of what the lines are.”

She explained that much of her inspiration comes from the growing collection of Avatar Chronicles novels, particularly those centered on former Avatars Kyoshi, Yangchen, and Roku. Boylan revealed she read the first Roku novel shortly before filming Season 2 and admitted she already has ideas waiting if the opportunity ever arises.

“I love the idea of what happens after the war is won, and all of these kids’ lives go on after the show is over. It’s not the end… I have those ideas in my back pocket.”

Her comments suggest that the creative team has already begun considering what life looks like after the events covered in the original animated series.

Executive producer and director Jabbar Raisani echoed those thoughts, confirming that conversations about a possible fourth season happen regularly within the production team. Boylan added that even while completing post-production on Season 3, they often discuss potential casting choices for future characters and enjoy doing their own “fancasting” for roles that have not yet appeared.

Avatar The Last Airbender Season 2 on Netflix

The Avatar universe offers decades of untold stories

One reason a fourth season remains a realistic possibility is the sheer amount of source material available outside the original television series.

Although the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender concluded in 2008 after three seasons, Nickelodeon significantly expanded the franchise through novels and comics. Publisher Amulet Books released multiple bestselling novels by F.C. Yee, exploring Avatar Kyoshi’s rise before later shifting focus to Avatar Yangchen. More recently, author Randy Ribay continued the Chronicles of the Avatar series with novels centered on Avatar Roku, while franchise co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino remained involved in the creative process.

Meanwhile, Dark Horse Comics has continued the story after the original series finale, exploring Aang and his friends rebuilding the world following the Hundred Year War. Other comic series have filled gaps before The Legend of Korra, providing decades of unexplored history that could easily serve as material for future live-action seasons.

With roughly 70 years separating the end of Aang’s story from Korra’s arrival, Netflix has no shortage of potential storylines should it choose to continue adapting the universe.

Strong audience response could influence Netflix’s decision

Although Netflix has yet to announce any plans beyond Season 3, the show’s future will likely depend on audience engagement and long-term viewing numbers.

Season 1 proved to be one of Netflix’s biggest television successes following its 2024 debut, leading the company to renew the adaptation through its planned conclusion. Early reactions to Season 2 have been even more positive, with critics praising improvements in storytelling, pacing, visual effects, and character development.

If Season 2 continues attracting strong viewership and Season 3 delivers a satisfying conclusion, Netflix could view additional Avatar projects as a valuable opportunity to expand one of its growing fantasy franchises.

The company has already followed this strategy with several successful properties. Following the popularity of its live-action One Piece adaptation, Netflix expanded the franchise with a new anime remake, The One Piece, alongside additional animated projects. Likewise, Stranger Things has grown beyond its main series through spin-offs such as Tales From ’85.

Given the rich mythology surrounding the Avatar universe, similar expansion plans—whether through live-action sequels, spin-offs, or adaptations of the novels—remain a realistic possibility if audience demand continues.
