House MD is an American drama series premiered on 16 November 2004 and aired for over seven years. It secured a place in the Critic’s top ten list within this timespan. The show won two Golden Globe awards and was nominated for Emmy’s for six years.
Based in New Jersey, the show revolves around Dr. Gregory House, a ‘medical genius’ who leads a team of other brilliant diagnosticians who work in Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH). They find solutions to uncommon problems and try to cure patients who have lost all hope.
The storyline is gripping and keeps the audience on edge. The dialogues and the banter between the team are worth watching every penny.
Who Was Dr. Kutner?
Dr. Lawrence Kutner was one of the diagnosticians who worked under House and was a witty and charming individual. He was the one who was believed to be the next House in the way he worked and lived. The exact wordings are, “he shares (House’s) philosophy of medicine.”
Born to an Indian family, he lived in California. However, when his parents were murdered in an armed robbery, he became a foster child and was later adopted by a Jewish family.
Who Is The Man Behind Dr. Kutner’s Character?
Dr. Lawrence Kutner is played by Kalpen Suresh Modi, who professionally goes by the name Kal Penn. He is an American actor, author, academic lecturer, and former White House staff member in the Barack Obama administration.
The Reason Behind Kutner’s Death.
In Season 5, Episode 20, titled Simple Explanation, Dr. Lawrence Kutner commits suicide with a gun and is found dead in his apartment by his colleagues – Dr. Remy Hadley (played by Olivia Wilde) and Dr. Eric Foreman (played by Omar Epps).
His death is so sudden that it leaves everybody shocked. They tried to grasp why he took this extreme step but couldn’t find any. Sometimes guilt tries to take hold, and other times pity. Nobody becomes successful in finding the truth as he had shared nothing of the sort with his colleagues.
As the episode progresses, House believes it to be murder rather than suicide under extreme duress. He sidelines police investigation and focuses his entire attention on this “supposed” murder rather than diagnosing and treating his patients.
The show’s producers confirm that it was suicide, although the reason for his death is never revealed. While some criticized the show for this suicide, claiming it was pointless and unnecessary, others lauded the show for how it handled Kutner’s death and said that it added to the dramatics and the suspense.
Why Did Writers Kill Kal Penn’s Character?
The audience asked whether this is a medical drama or Game of Thrones, where every character is being killed off. An awful lot of people have been written off from the show. However, in the case of Kal Penn, the reason is surprisingly good. And NO! He wasn’t fired.
No sane person would ever give up the job at the White House. Hence, no wonder Kal Penn left the show.
