Sony Pictures Classics has officially announced that Damien Chazelle’s impressive film Whiplash will be back in theaters across the country to mark its 10th anniversary.
The psychological drama, produced by Blumhouse, Right of Way Films, and Bold Films, will be re-released with a new 4K DCP on September 20, 2024. This will follow a special anniversary screening at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th.
Whiplash won three Academy Awards when it was first released, including Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing, and Best Supporting Actor for J.K. Simmons’ intense role as the demanding instructor, Terrence Fletcher. The film was also nominated for Best Picture but lost to Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).
Many still view Whiplash as flawless from beginning to end. Simmons’ performance, along with Miles Teller’s role as the ambitious young musician Andrew, are seen as standout roles in their careers.
Simmons is recognized as one of the greatest movie villains, earning not just the Oscar, but also the BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice awards in early 2015.
When Will THe Movie Return?
Whiplash first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, where it was the opening night film and won both the Grand Jury Prize for drama and the Audience Award. Critics called it a masterpiece, and it enjoyed great success in the following awards seasons.
Earlier this year, it was named the top Sundance film of all time in a survey by the Sundance Institute for the festival’s 40th anniversary. In the ten years since its release, the film has continued to grow in popularity and is now even more highly regarded by fans.
The film follows Andrew Neyman (Teller), a young jazz drummer striving to be the best at his prestigious music school. Terence Fletcher (Simmons), known for his harsh teaching methods, brings Andrew into his band, pushing him to the edge of his skills and sanity.
