California, USA
“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” has been shot primarily in California, USA. There was an ample number of places used to provide the essence and justice to the storyline of the movie.
Talking first wast the Mammoth Mountain in California where we see Indy and his fellow mates needed to put together an idea of escaping after the plane is left aside by the crew. The Himalayas stated in the film were actually the peaks of this Mammoth Mountain. To be more accurate, Crest Ridge Run was used to shoot.
Literally, all the main sites of California like mountains, as discussed above, were used to shoot. Further, it also has the Tuolumne River on the eastern side of Yosemite National Park. Remember the scene where Indy’s life raft crashes are actually this river? This scene was one of the most difficult scenes to be shot.
Other than these places, some other sites like South Fork American River and Hamilton Air Force Base, Novato in California were also used. The Asian airport scenes that you notice in the scenes are shot on the mentioned Air Force Base and it was the same place where Indy, Willie Scott, and Short Round tried to board Lao Che’s plane.
Sri Lanka
Another country where an important section of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was filmed in Sri Lanka. Thus, Kandy city in Sri Lanka was used to shoot the majority of parts of the film. On the voyage, three of them (Indy, Willie & Short Round), met Shaman and he led them to Mayapore. Thus, this village was set up in Hantana Tea Plantations in Kandy.
After having a proper meal and boost up in Mayapore, they were set to leave and they left grandly on elephants. The whole elephant scene was shot in Elephant Orphanage in Rambukkana, Sri Lanka. This was one of the most beautiful gestures seen in the entire film.
Now, try to remember the scene where Indiana grabs the three sacred stones from Mola Ram’s temple. Later, Indy even threatens to throw them away from a bridge, this scene was taken at Victoria Dam Observation Center on the Mahaweli Ganga, Sri Lanka.
Macau, China
Macau in China was also a prime location that served as the exterior location of Shanghai. You can visit Macau any time of the year, it is just so fun to be there with your closed ones.
Elstree Film Studio, Hertfordshire, UK
However, other than the real locations some reel sites were also used in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. The prime and the only studio used in the film was the Elstree Film Studio in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. Indiana and Willy’s rooms were a set made in this studio only.
Moreover, the whole Obi-Wan Club, the mining quarry, as well as the jungle campfire was set up in Elstree Studio only. Thus, this concludes all the filming locations of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
