☰ KEY HIGHLIGHTS
▪ Unlike Yellowstone, the show focuses on a real-life figure, showcasing how Reeves overcame adversity to become a revered lawman.
▪ Bass Reeves retired in 1907 after arresting thousands of felons and died in 1910.
▪ The Lone Star State of Texas was the primary location for filming the series.

“Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” set in the “Yellowstone” universe, follows the travels of the title character, who also happens to be the first black deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. The Western historical drama series is based on the genuine heroic tales of a man who stood by his convictions and is a creation of Chad Feehan.

The series, which stars David Oyelowo as the title character, follows the turbulent path of a man who was formerly a slave. Shot against the iconic backdrop of a Western classic, the series captures that essence. Naturally, fans have wanted to know the location of Lawman Bass Reeves’ filming.

Reeves was born into slavery in July 1838, shortly before the Civil War, in Crawford County, Arkansas. While the precise year of Reeves’ birth is unknown, it is generally accepted that the young Bass Reeves moved to Grayson County, Texas, at the age of eight at the behest of George Reeves, the owner’s son.

Reeves had a reputation for honesty and diligence after that, which are essential traits for any law enforcement officer to possess. But because he was a slave, Reeves was unable to give law enforcement or the legal profession any serious thought.

Here are all the specifics, then. The Paramount+ series documents the rolling landscape of farms and streets that is typically associated with Western films. The Lone Star State of Texas was the primary location for filming the series. The show’s main photography started on January 17, 2023, earlier this year, and was finished in the next several months.

The last day of the production was June 6, 2023. Director Christina Alexandra shared with her fans her behind-the-scenes adventure on Instagram. “My love for this cast and crew is bigger than a Texas thunderhead in the spring,” the author said. Viewers are curious about the specifics of the filming locations, given the premise of the series.

Bass Reeves Filming Locations

North Texas, Texas

The story of Bass Reeves is supposed to explain the authenticity and structures of the 19th-century paradigm. The show’s writers chose to film the episodes in various parts of North Texas to illustrate the series’ central idea. Stephenville, Strawn, and other noteworthy locations were visited throughout the filming process.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the precursor to “Yellowstone,” has several North Texas locations with “1883” as well. Producer Taylor Sheridan’s property served as a filming location for the television series in addition to being used for the outside scenes.

The Bosque Ranch near Weatherford, Texas, is home to Taylor Sheridan’s ranch, where several of the show’s scenes were filmed. In addition, Fort Worth started to serve as the production team’s main location for executing their plot.

Producer Taylor Sheridan not only has a ranch in Weatherford, but he also has family in Fort Worth. The cast and crew of “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” who graduated from Pascal High School, were greeted warmly by the locals.

Not only that, but Texas Mayor Mattie Parker had also spoken at a conference to declare that production would begin in September 2022. Even though the historical character Bass Reeves was born and raised in Oklahoma, the showrunners chose to film in Texas rather than Oklahoma to maintain the realism of a traditional Western.

The topography and abundance of cover in Texas seemed to make it an ideal place for primary photography. Bass Reeves was a person who had advanced through the ranks, having triumphed over structural tyranny. His progress was made possible by his familiarity with Indian country and his proficiency in the languages of the Native Americans.

Famous for his incredible commitment and for policing up to 75,000 square miles in Oklahoma and Arkansas, the series captures the unwavering spirit of the legendary marshal. Another charming town that served as the show’s center is Waxahachie. Some of the interior sequences were filmed within the Ellis County Courthouse at the Waxahachie City Council, which is situated south of Dallas.

In addition, Glen Rose and Weatherford served as a few of the several locales used in the show’s plot. The showrunners did not cut corners when it came to maintaining the authenticity of the settings to fully capture the mood of the era. Lastly, a few sequences were recorded in Palo Pinto County by the creative team.
