Episode 4 is titled “What If… Iron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster?”. Here, we will see Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, as he tries his very best to overthrow Grandmaster. Basically, what happened is during the battle of New York in 2012 (in the first Avengers Movie), Iron Man carried a missile into space to destroy the Chitori, and then he landed back on Earth.
But in this What If story, Iron Man does not land back on Earth and is transported to Grandmaster’s planet, Sakkar. This is the same as what happened with Thor in Thor Ragnarok, but instead of Thor, Iron Man is on the planet.
And Tony Stark being the cocky person he is, will challenge the Grandmaster into some kind of cart race, and the willer of the race will take over the Sakkar planet. You can definitely expect to see a lot of MCU characters appear in this race.
What If Season 2 Episode 2 Recap
Before diving into What If Season 2 Episode 4, let’s quickly recap the previous episode. What If Season 2 Episode 2 was basically the 1980s Avengers? What if The Avengers formed in the late 1980s? So, the roster is different based on all the people that were active around that period.
The episode was more about the Avengers forming, but in the 1980s, the actual title was “What if Peter Quill attacked Earth’s mightiest Heroes?” which is the tagline for The Avengers in the comics.
The whole idea is this is meant to take place in the year 1988, about six months after little kid Peter Quill was taken by Yondu during the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
He returns to Earth because they’re in the middle of Ego The Living Planets expansion plan during Guardians of the Galaxy 2. It’s a bit of an amalgam plot of some of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies with Ego, the Living Planet, Peter Quill, and the formation of The Avengers.
There are a couple of things that they changed about the way the Ego’s plan works during Guardians of the Galaxy 2 for the purposes of this episode. During the episode, they explain he can’t do it all simultaneously. He can’t activate all the seeds. He has to send Peter Quill or himself around each planet one by one, activating the seeds, going the slow way around.
When he’s coming to Earth, he’s already converted the rest of the nine realms. Thor basically explains later in the episode that Asgard is no more, as are the rest of the nine realms. Earth is like the last remaining one.
During the actual opening scene, though, Peter Quill is flying around the universe in the same type of celestial ship that Ego had during Guardians of the Galaxy 2. He’s been sending Peter Quill, like I said, all across the universe, one planet at a time, activating these different seeds. A lot more happened in previous episodes, but now let’s discuss when Episode 4 of What If Season 2 will be released and what will happen in it.

What if Season 2 Episode 4 is released on 25 December 2023 on Disney Plus? This Episode is titled “What If… Iron Man Crashed into the Grandmaster?”. At the time of writing, 9 episodes are scheduled for this second season of What If, and we think there will be only 9 episodes like the previous season.
The Synopsis for Episode 4: “Following his plan to destroy the Chitauri Fleet during the Battle of New York, which leaves him stranded on the planet. Tony Stark’s attempts to remove The Grandmaster culminate in a grand prix that transforms into a demolition derby, with the winner taking the chance to become the new ruler of Sakaar. ”
