The Red Wedding is an event that takes place in season 3, episode 9 of Game of Thrones. The red wedding was a brutal massacre that happened during the War of The Five Kings. The mastermind behind the gruesome massacre was Lord Walder Frey. He arranged it against Robb Stark, who was the King in the North. Lord Walder Frey wanted to take revenge against Robb Stark for breaking the marriage pact between the families and between House Stark and House Frey.
In season one, Robb Stark makes a deal with Lord Frey. He tells him that in exchange for his loyalty and a safe passage to cross the river that he would marry into the Frey House by marrying one of his daughters. Lord Frey agreed. But Robb broke the vow and promise in season two. He secretly marries Talisa, even though his mother, Catelyn warned him against it and reminded Robb of his vow to Lord Frey. And married his true love, Talisa. Talisa soon gets pregnant with a child as well. Upon hearing this news, Lord Frey is not happy.
So then, instead, Edmure Tully is arranged to marry one of Lord Frey’s daughters. The Stark army and family arrive at Lord Frey’s residence, and Lord Frey extends them inside, forgiving them and inviting them inside. Then the Red Wedding happens. Edmure marries one of Lord Frey’s daughters, and the ceremony goes smoothly without a hitch. At the reception after the couple is wed, the music bands start to play the Rains of Castamere.
The doors are shut, and Catelyn notices something is wrong but is too late when she tries to warn Robb. Lord Frey gives a command, and a man steps forwards, grabbing Talisa. Talisa is stabbed repeatedly in her pregnant belly, and her unborn child is murdered instantly. Waiters and other people who are disguised at the reception reveal their true forms and open fire.
The Plot and Ambush
A war is started, and Robb’s army is outpowered and outnumbered. Robb is wounded severely, and he crawls and is seen trying to make his way to Talisa, who lies on the floor bleeding and paralyzed. Lord Frey commands to stop the attacks so he can with cruel pleasure as he observes Robb mourn and cry over Talisa and his unborn child, both dead. After a few minutes, Catelyn manages to hold Lord Walder’s eighth wide hostage.
Catelyn holds a knife to the wife’s throat and begs Lord Frey to let Robb walk free and get out of here. She promises that they will not fight back and even makes an oath. But Lord Frey doesn’t accept the trade, not trusting Catelyn’s words. She even threatens to slit his wife’s throat, but Lord Frey doesn’t seem too bothered by it.
Robb manages to bring himself to his feet and is distracted by the sight of his mother. At this critical moment of weakness, Roose Bolton steps forward and stabs Robb Stark in the heart, and he is killed in an instant, his body crumpling to the ground limply. After this Catelyn, true to her words, drags the knife against the Lord’s wife, killing her, but Lord Frey isn’t too shaken up or bothered by this. Catelyn is sobbing on the floor as she cries over her son’s dead body and is ambushed from behind, her neck being slit from the back. Outside, the massacre continues, many of the Stark’s army being killed and shot to death.
